About Secondo Marco
Marco Speri made a bold move in 2008. He left Speri Viticoltori, his family’s world-famous estate in the Veneto, traveled west to Fumane in the... Valpolicella district, and started his own winery, Secondo Marco. Nestled between Verona and Lago di Garda in the foothills of the Lessini Mountains, Secondo Marco, which translates to “according to Marco,” sports 37 acres of vines, all planted to indigenous varietals. Leaving his family’s estate, Marco knew he wanted to make wines his own way, and that means striking a balance between traditionalism and modernity. Marco farms organically and relies on natural yeasts for fermentation and aging in big, neutral botti, but also using temperature-controlled fermentation that helps to create delicate, juicy, rich wines that will never overpower. It’s how Marco wants it at Secondo Marco.Marchesi Antinori - La Braccesca

About Marchesi Antinori La Braccesca
Headquartered in Montepulciano, Tuscany, the Antinori family’s La Braccesca estate makes under-the-radar gems that represent both the... region’s traditional roots and its modern reinvention. The Antinori family purchased La Braccesca in 1990, and the 840-acre estate comprises two very distinct parcels: 255 acres around Montepulciano and 586 acres that span the border between Montepulciano and Cortona, located to the North. The La Braccesca estate does craft four different traditional Montepulciano wines, but the winery also makes two Syrah bottlings, which derive from the estate’s Cortona holdings — and the winery’s Bramasole vineyard is one of Cortona’s best for the Rhône’s dark-skinned, juicy Syrah grape. While the DOCG rules surrounding Vino Nobile di Montepulciano are pretty strict, Cortona’s DOC rules reflect the hilly region’s international flair, its loam-and-clay soils, and its higher elevation. If you’re an Antinori fan who first fell in love with wines from Chianti Classico or Bolgheri, you owe it to your palate to experience La Braccesca’s stylish, value-packed beauties.Antinori

About Badia a Passignano
One of the Antinori family of estates, Badia a Passignano sits on just over 550 acres in the heart of Chianti Classico in Sambuca Val di Pesa, a few... miles south of Antinori's Tignanello estate. Badia a Passignano has grown Sangiovese for millennia, and therefore it was a natural decision for the Antinori family to dedicate this winery to the production of Chianti Classico Gran Selezione, the crème de la crème of Chianti’s wines. Like a fairytale fortress in the heart of Chianti Classico, Badia a Passignano's stone walls rise out of a thicket of cypress trees, and this former abbey, originally built at some point between 395 and 891, has played home to the Vallombrosian order, an arm of the Benedictine monks, for centuries — in fact, the Vallombrosian monks, who specialize in viniculture and forestry, continue to live on the premises. In 1987, the Antinori family bought the land surrounding the abbey, and the Antinori family uses the abbey’s ancient cellars to age its Chianti Classico Gran Selezione.Tenuta Terraviva
Terraviva Ekwo Pecorino d’Abruzzo DOC 2022 750ml
WD94
About Tenuta Terraviva
The name is a hint, but Tenuta Terraviva, located just one kilometer from the Adriatic in the rolling hills of Tortoreto in Abruzzo, is committed to... crafting natural wines that telegraph their terroir with every sip. Organic since 1998, family-owned-and-operated Terraviva grows native grapes like Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, Trebbiano, Passerina and Pecorino, crafting two lines of wines, one made from younger vines released under the Terraviva label and one from older vines that’s fittingly called Old Vines. The Bordini family has worked this land since the 1970s, and their holdings now comprise a 54-acre block of sandy, limestone-rich vineyards that sit in an impressive natural amphitheater. Hand-picked grapes ferment with only natural yeasts, and the wines mature in steel to maintain their purity and typicity.Poderi Fogliati
Fogliati Barolo Bussia DOCG 2016 750ml
WD93
Poderi Fogliati
Founded in the 1950s by Guido Fogliati, Fogliati’s lands in Barolo have been growing grapes for more than 200 years. However, only recently has Fogliati... begun estate-bottling its wines. During the years between Guido’s death and the winery’s recent resurrection by his grandchildren, Annalisa and Guido, the winery sold its grapes to estates like Ceretto and Pio Cesare. However, Fogliati began releasing its own wines with the 2016 vintage — and Barolo lovers have much to celebrate. Annalisa and Guido engaged Gian Luca Colombo to be their winemaker, they have taken the estate organic, and they have adopted a strictly traditional approach to winemaking. Fogliati’s 17 acres sit on the border between Monforte and Castiglione Falletto, on the Pugnane hill in Bussia, and they boast terrific marly soil and Nebbiolo vines that are 80 years old! Intense, elegant, beautifully made, and very traditional, Fogliati’s wines belong in your cellar, on your table, and in your glass.Meroi

About Talenti
Family-owned-and-operated, Talenti’s Pian di Conte estate is a standard-bearer of approachable, delicious Brunello that’s nonetheless age-worthy and nuanced.... Pierluigi Talenti, who came to Montalcino from his native Romagna in the 1950s, fell in love with the region’s rolling hills and sundrenched vineyards, purchasing his land in the mid-twentieth century. It’s easy to see why — located close to the medieval village of Sant’Angelo in Colle, Talenti’s 90 acres (half under vine) sit at about 1,300 feet above sea level, where they are shielded from harsh weather by nearby Mount Amiata and fanned by breezes blowing from the Tyrrhenian Sea. The estate’s 45 acres of vines come from eleven different plots, each with slightly different terroir, soil structure, and microclimates, and together, they offer a breathtaking panorama of this estate’s southern Brunello subzone. Talenti has made a reputation for consistently crafting beautiful, terroir-driven Brunello wines that pack a terrific quality-to-price punch.Palmento Costanzo

About Palmento Costanzo
In the subregion of Sicily’s Contrada Santo Spirito, on the north slope of Mount Etna near the village of Passopisciaro, sits the Palmento Costanzo... estate. Owned and operated by Valeria Agosto and her husband, Mimmo Constanzo, this organic winery is surrounded by Italy’s Parco Naturale dell’Etna, a UNESCO World Heritage site. In 2010, Valeria and Mimmo purchased a 17-acre existing estate in Etna Nord, and they named their estate after the eighteenth-century stone winemaking structure, the palmento, located on the property, expanding their holdings to 45 acres over time. Planted to indigenous grapes Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio, Carricante, and Catarratto, Palmento Costanzo’s vineyards grow on a snaking series of more than 100 terraces, about 2,000 to 2,600 feet above sea level, and the team relies on ultra-natural winemaking techniques like using only naturally occurring yeasts, gravity flow through lava stone, and aging in large “ovum” barrels. The resulting wines feel almost alive with energy, brimming with terroir, and almost achingly pure — Palmento Costanzo is a rising star in Italian wine.Ornellaia

About Ornellaia
Though Ornellaia entered the Super-Tuscan field later than Sassicaia and Solaia, Ornellaia made up for lost time with global impact, and today, Ornellaia’s... flagship and other wines are hot commodities on the fine wine market. Ornellaia’s 244 acres sit in Bolgheri, just a few miles from the Tyrrhenian Sea, and the estate’s holdings are split between two parcels, a 100-acre parcel located in a natural bowl near the state-of-the-art cantina and the remaining acres in the Bellaria subzone closer to the sea. This assortment of microclimates, supported by soils that range from stony to clayey to loamy, offers ideal growing conditions to its predominantly Bordeaux-style grape varietals. Since 2005, the Frescobaldi family has owned and operated Ornellaia, and Axel Heinz has served as the company’s chief winemaker, running the Ornellaia operation with a painstaking eye for detail and dedication to his craft.Il Poggione

About Il Poggione Brunello
Founded near the end of the nineteenth century, Il Poggione’s modern age began in 1958, when Leopoldo Franceschi, grandfather of the current... owner, engaged renowned winemaker Pierluigi Talenti as the estate’s winemaker. Pierluigi made the most of Il Poggione’s considerable natural gifts for 40 years, shaping the estate’s muscular, graceful, and aromatic house style as he trained Fabrizio Bindocci, who assumed control of the estate in 1999, and he now runs the estate with his son, Alessandro. Nestled in the southern Brunello subzone in the hills around Sant’Angelo in Colle, Il Poggione’s 1,482 acres (302 planted to vine) possess some astonishing terroir. Today’s Il Poggione grows its grapes with non-interventionist methods, and it crafts its wines in its state-of-the-art cantina using traditional methods, including aging its wines in large oak vats in its underground cellar. One of the great authentic Brunello makers, Il Poggione’s wines consistently over-perform both in the cellar and on the table.Cerbaiona
Cerbaiona Rosso di Montalcino 2021 750ml

About Cerbaiona
Situated just northeast of the town of Montalcino, Cerbaiona’s lands occupy prime territory; its steep vineyards boast soils of limestone, shale, and clay,... while its location offers a happy medium between the structured wines of Brunello’s northern zone and the ripeness of Brunello’s southern zone. In 2015, Matthew Fioretti and his team bought Cerbaiona and began an ambitious six-year replanting program that increases vine density, replaces international vines with specially selected Sangiovese Grosso clones, and expands the estate’s holdings to almost ten acres. In addition, the new Cerbaiona team has updated the cantina — it’s a lot of hard work in the service of raising the bar at the cult Cerbaiona estate! The payoff began with the release of the velvety and layered 2016 Brunello, a sign that the future is rosy at Cerbaiona, one of the great Brunello estates.Le Macchiole

About Le Macchiole
Founded in 1983 on a nine-acre plot, Le Macchiole is Bolgheri’s best-known boutique producer. Hometown hero Eugenio Campolmi and wife Cinzia Merli... launched Le Macchiole with a big dream and almost no money, starting their estate by planting a handful of grape varietals with scattershot abandon, experimenting to see which grapes flourished in the estate’s mineral-rich soils, and crafting mono-varietal expressions from their vines. Sadly, Eugenio passed away unexpectedly in 2002, but Cinzia continued in his footsteps. Cinzia hired her brother, Massimo Merli, as estate manager, methodically added acreage, carefully fine-tuned the viticultural protocol, and steadily raised the bar with every vintage. Today, Le Macchiole’s 54 acres are farmed biodynamically, and the estate produces a range of six wines: three mono-varietal reds, as well as two blends, one white and one red. Cinzia still helms the estate, now aided by her sons, Elia and Mattia, who are ensuring the future of Le Macchiole’s terroir-driven, elegant, and showstopping wines.Marchesi Antinori Tormaresca

About Marchesi Antinori Tormaresca
Tormaresca, the Antinori family’s Puglia estate, founded in 1998, began with two parts: the 247-acre Tenuta Bocca di Lupo, which sits in... Castel del Monte in the wild beauty of Murgia, and the 1,235-acre Masseria Maìme in Salento, close to the Adriatic Sea. In time, Antinori split these estates, bottling Bocca di Lupo as its own entity, while expanding Tormaresca to include additional inland vines at Tenuta Carrubo, located in Manduria. Growing both indigenous and international grape varietals, Tormaresca draws from these locations to create wines that offer a panoramic view of Puglia, while offering a finessed style that bridges traditional Italian and more modern wine profiles. As with most of Antinori's estates, Tormaresca and Bocca di Lupo are under the guidance of CEO, enologist, and winemaker Renzo Cotarella and his team, who work to craft wines that transmit the region's unusual volcanic terroir. Together, these sites craft a range of delicious, terroir-driven Puglian wines that pack a punch at their relatively low price points.Paolo Bea

About Paolo Bea
Founded more than 400 years ago, the family-owned-and-operated Paolo Bea estate has long been a standard bearer of the Italian Slow Food Movement, and its... motto is "Nature should be observed, listened to and integrated, not dominated. Wine is not made by man but generated by nature!" Because of this dedication to natural agriculture and winemaking, Bea’s team nurtures its grapes with organic, non-interventionist practices, and it continues that reliance on nature in the cellar, crafting its wines without temperature control and without any additives, yeasts, fining or filtration. Paolo Bea passed away in 2024, as did his son Giuseppe, who had helped run the estate; however, Paolo had trained his winemaker son Giampiero in his ways of natural winegrowing. Aside from helming Paolo Bea, Giampiero served as president of the Italian natural wine society Viniveri for years, and he also advises other estates on making wines as natural as his own. The Bea estate purposefully keeps its production low — so low that demand for its exceptional reds and outrageous whites always exceed supply.Marchesi Antinori Castello della Sala

Marchese Antinori Castello della Sala
The stone fortress that serves as the namesake for Umbria’s Castello della Sala was built in 1350, but the modern age for this estate... began in 1940, when Marchese Niccolò Antinori purchased the 1,200-acre estate (495 acres planted to vine). In the late 1970s, Piero Antinori, son of Niccolò, felt inspired to create an age-worthy, complex white wine, so he joined forces with Umbrian native Renzo Cotarella, who had recently joined the Castello della Sala team. After years of tinkering, experimenting, and eureka moments, the estate’s flagship white, Cervaro della Sala was born, which saw its debut with the 1985 vintage, and a new Italian wine icon was born. But Castello della Sala isn’t limited to high quality whites; the estate’s vineyards sport fossil-rich calcareous-clay soils that, while ideal for white grape varietals, also makes for spectacular Pinot Noir.
