About Gaja Ca’Marcanda
In 1996, Angelo Gaja expanded his Piedmont winemaking enterprise into Tuscany, first establishing his Brunello estate, Pieve Santa Restituta, and two... years later, opening his Bolgheri estate, Ca’Marcanda. Dedicated to producing the kind of Super-Tuscan wines that put Bolgheri on the map, Ca’Marcanda’s stylish, approachable wines have the Gaja trademark ability to blend international profiles with Italian structure. The estate boasts 300 acres of vines, all planted by the Gaja team because there were no pre-existing vines, that grow in eleven different kinds of soils, though two types dominate: terre brune, or brown soil, which is mineral rich lying at the base of the foothills, and terra bianche, or white soil, which is the light-colored calcareous clay much beloved by winemakers. Ca’Marcanda crafts three reds — Camarcanda, Magari, and Promis — as well as one white, Vistamare; all are delicious, characterful wines that are truly representative of their Gaja family name.About Marchesi Antinori Tenuta Guado al Tasso
Piero Antinori, the guiding force behind the Antinori family’s contemporary period and the family’s most game-changing... wines, took his time to release his first Super-Tuscan wine from his Guado al Tasso estate. Piero recognized the great potential of his lands located in the acclaimed Bolgheri Bowl, a natural amphitheater located about 60 miles southwest of Siena, that was drenched with sunlight during the day and cooled at night from sea breezes. Moreover, Guado al Tasso possessed clay-rich alluvial soils with very fine gravel, the distinctive feature that makes Bolgheri wines rich in minerality and lends them their characteristic terroir. While Antinori’s Guado al Tasso had crafted world-famous rosé wines since the 1970s, and although the land’s viticultural history stretches back to the seventeenth century, the estate’s initial premiere red wine, Guado al Tasso, didn’t come on the scene until 1994; however, this blockbuster Super Tuscan made up for lost time and quickly gained global recognition. Growing a selection of Bordeaux-style grape varietals as well as Vermentino, Guado Al Tasso crafts blockbuster reds — including the original flagship Guado al Tasso and the estate’s rising star, the cult Cabernet Franc, Matarocchio.Ornellaia
Though Ornellaia entered the Super-Tuscan field later than Sassicaia and Solaia, Ornellaia made up for lost time with global impact, and today, Ornellaia’s... flagship and other wines are hot commodities on the fine wine market. Ornellaia’s 244 acres sit in Bolgheri, just a few miles from the Tyrrhenian Sea, and the estate’s holdings are split between two parcels, a 100-acre parcel located in a natural bowl near the state-of-the-art cantina and the remaining acres in the Bellaria subzone closer to the sea. This assortment of microclimates, supported by soils that range from stony to clayey to loamy, offers ideal growing conditions to its predominantly Bordeaux-style grape varietals. Since 2005, the Frescobaldi family has owned and operated Ornellaia, and Axel Heinz has served as the company’s chief winemaker, running the Ornellaia operation with a painstaking eye for detail and dedication to his craft.About Tenuta San Guido
The global fame of Super-Tuscan Sassicaia’s fame has obscured its decades-long emergence into the world. After making his home at Tenuta San Guido,... located in Bolgheri, Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta noticed that the soils at his estate were rocky, reminiscent of the soils in Graves, Bordeaux. In 1944, he was struck with the inspiration to plant Cabernets Sauvignon and Franc, and for more than two decades, Mario made his Bordeaux-style wine solely for family consumption. Then Mario engaged esteemed enologist Giacomo Tachis to perfect the wine, and Sassicaia was born with its 1968 vintage. Sassicaia and its Super-Tuscan revolution changed the face of Italian wine — and it catapulted Tenuta San Guido into the highest echelon of wine producers. Year in and year out, Sassicaia holds its place as one of the most beloved, collectable wines in the world, and Tenuta San Guido’s sterling reputation only grows more lustrous.About Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia
Sassicaia is arguably Italy’s most famous bottle of wine, and its maker, Tenuta San Guido, is Italian wine aristocracy. Sassicaia and its... Super-Tuscan revolution changed the face of Italian wine — and it catapulted Tenuta San Guido into the highest echelon of wine producers. Sassicaia has had such an impact on the Italian wine scene that, in 1994, it got its own DOC designation, the sole proprietary wine to have earned that distinction! Today, Marchese Nicolò Incisa della Rocchetta continues in his father’s footsteps even as he prepares to hand over San Guido estate to his son, Sebastian Rosa. Over the years, Tenuta San Guido expanded its vineyards to encompass 190 acres, planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, and the estate expanded its lineup to include “second” wine Guidalberto and entry-level Le Difese. Debuting with the 2000 vintage, Guidalberto holds fast to its ideal of accessibility upon release, but over the years, it has grown more refined, polished, and elegant. Le Difese, debuting with the 2003 vintage, does the work of the estate's "everyday" wine, but when Tenuta San Guido makes it, the “everyday” wine is still a reason to celebrate. Tenuta San Guido’s outstanding Guidalberto and Le Difese bottlings add even more luster to Italy’s premier Super-Tuscan estate.About Tenuta San Guido
