One of the Antinori family of estates, Badia a Passignano sits on just over 550 acres in the heart of Chianti Classico in Sambuca Val di Pesa, a few... miles south of Antinori's Tignanello estate. Badia a Passignano has grown Sangiovese for millennia, and therefore it was a natural decision for the Antinori family to dedicate this winery to the production of Chianti Classico Gran Selezione, the crème de la crème of Chianti’s wines. Like a fairytale fortress in the heart of Chianti Classico, Badia a Passignano's stone walls rise out of a thicket of cypress trees, and this former abbey, originally built at some point between 395 and 891, has played home to the Vallombrosian order, an arm of the Benedictine monks, for centuries — in fact, the Vallombrosian monks, who specialize in viniculture and forestry, continue to live on the premises. In 1987, the Antinori family bought the land surrounding the abbey, and the Antinori family uses the abbey’s ancient cellars to age its Chianti Classico Gran Selezione.

While the Sassetti family have been farmers for many generations, they’ve been working as vine-growers and winemakers for four generations. A... founding member of the Brunello Consortium in 1967, Livio Sassetti inherited his family’s passion for wine, and he wanted the chance to estate-bottle his own Brunello, so in the early 1970's he purchased his own plot of land in Montosoli and founded the Pertimali estate, named for a cottage on the property. The 39-acre Pertimalli Sassetti estate now rests in the hands of Livio’s sons, Lorenzo, and Luciano, who join him in the production of elegant, complex, and aromatic wines that marry the distinctive Montalcino terroir with the structure of Burgundy. In addition to Pertimali Sassetti, the Sassetti family of estates includes La Querciolina in Umbria and Colle Argento in Valdobbiadene.

Originally from Piemonte, the Cinzano family — yes, that Cinzano family, the one that brought Vermouth to the global market —acquired the Col d’Orcia... estate in the 1970s and the winery’s Poggio al Vento soon became one of the iconic Brunello bottlings. The largest certified organic estates in all of Tuscany, Col d'Orcia's positioning on Brunello’s southwestern slope offers a warmer climate and helps the estate’s grapes become rounder, gentler, and a little less acidic than those from other parts of Montalcino. Col d'Orcia boasts albarese soil, the limestone-rich, mineral-laden earth that helps make Tuscany special. Col d’Orcia’s tenth-generation winemaker, Santiago Marone Cinzano, uses vinification techniques that are a mix of traditional and modern — for example, the estate employs both botti and barriques for aging, and this combination offers a compelling integration of power and finesse, as well as a terrific marriage of age-worthiness and drinkability.

The stone fortress that serves as the namesake for Umbria’s Castello della Sala was built in 1350, but the modern age for this estate... began in 1940, when Marchese Niccolò Antinori purchased the 1,200-acre estate (495 acres planted to vine). In the late 1970s, Piero Antinori, son of Niccolò, felt inspired to create an age-worthy, complex white wine, so he joined forces with Umbrian native Renzo Cotarella, who had recently joined the Castello della Sala team. After years of tinkering, experimenting, and eureka moments, the estate’s flagship white, Cervaro della Sala was born, which saw its debut with the 1985 vintage, and a new Italian wine icon was born. But Castello della Sala isn’t limited to high quality whites; the estate’s vineyards sport fossil-rich calcareous-clay soils that, while ideal for white grape varietals, also makes for spectacular Pinot Noir. Today’s Castello della Sala crafts a range of wines that include multiple whites and reds, as well as Muffato della Sala, a showstopping dessert wine.

Situated just northeast of the town of Montalcino, Cerbaiona’s lands occupy prime territory; its steep vineyards boast soils of limestone, shale, and clay,... while its location offers a happy medium between the structured wines of Brunello’s northern zone and the ripeness of Brunello’s southern zone. In 2015, Matthew Fioretti and his team bought Cerbaiona and began an ambitious six-year replanting program that increases vine density, replaces international vines with specially selected Sangiovese Grosso clones, and expands the estate’s holdings to almost ten acres. In addition, the new Cerbaiona team has updated the cantina — it’s a lot of hard work in the service of raising the bar at the cult Cerbaiona estate! The payoff began with the release of the velvety and layered 2016 Brunello, a sign that the future is rosy at Cerbaiona, one of the great Brunello estates.

Headquartered in Montepulciano, Tuscany, the Antinori family’s La Braccesca estate makes under-the-radar gems that represent both the... region’s traditional roots and its modern reinvention. The Antinori family purchased La Braccesca in 1990, and the 840-acre estate comprises two very distinct parcels: 255 acres around Montepulciano and 586 acres that span the border between Montepulciano and Cortona, located to the North. The La Braccesca estate does craft four different traditional Montepulciano wines, but the winery also makes two Syrah bottlings, which derive from the estate’s Cortona holdings — and the winery’s Bramasole vineyard is one of Cortona’s best for the Rhône’s dark-skinned, juicy Syrah grape. While the DOCG rules surrounding Vino Nobile di Montepulciano are pretty strict, Cortona’s DOC rules reflect the hilly region’s international flair, its loam-and-clay soils, and its higher elevation. These days, Arianna Occhipinti stands as a venerated rockstar among makers of natural wine, so it’s easy to forget that Arianna’s inaugural... bottling went on the market less than two decades ago when she was just 22. Inspired by her uncle, Giusto Occhipinti of COS wines in Sicily, Arianna went to Milan to study enology, and she was quickly disillusioned by the teaching that focused on chemistry and labs. Arianna felt inspired by grapes, by soil, by weather, and by the beauty that her native island of Sicily brought to wine. Arianna returned to Vittoria, Sicily, and she began making wines her way. Today, she owns 56 acres (17 under vine), farmed organically, growing indigenous Frappato and Nero d’Avola, as well as Grillo, Moscato di Alessandria, Zibibbo, and Albano. In 1893, Francesco Nardi left his family’s farm to seek his fortune here in the States. After great success, Francesco returned to Toscana to start his... own farm design business. In 1950, his son Silvio purchased Casale del Bosco in Montalcino, and eight years later, Silvio was among the first members of the newborn Consorzio del Vino Brunello, the ruling body of Brunello production. Silvio Nardi’s contemporary era began in 1991 when Silvio's daughter Emilia assumed control of the estate. Nardi now covers about 200 acres in two different locations, and its wines bear distinct trademarks of elegance, longevity, and silky-smooth texture. Two major parcels comprise Silvio Nardi's holdings: Casale del Bosco, whose five vineyards offer western exposure and soils of schist, shale, clay and jasper, and Manachiara, whose east-facing three parcels sport marly, sandy soils laced with limestone. Located in the rolling hills of Alba, Piemonte, the Prunotto estate epitomizes the timeless beauty and effortless elegance of the Langhe.... Founded in 1904, Prunotto began as a wine cooperative formed in Serralunga and presided over by Alfredo Prunotto. Beppe Colla assumed control of the estate in 1956 and expanded Prunotto’s success with a savvy strategy of researching the finest vineyard sites, purchasing the best grapes, and experimenting with cru bottlings. The Antinori family started distributing Prunotto’s wine in 1989 and assumed control of the estate in 1994. In a project spearheaded by Albiera Antinori, Prunotto recreated itself with an eye to wines defined by very specific terroir. Albiera began researching and purchasing specific vineyards, eventually amassing 161 acres that spread across the Langhe and Monferrato, with holdings in the legendary Barolo vineyards of Vigna Colonnello, Bussia, Bric Turot, as well as Barbera’s Pian Romualdo, Barbaresco’s Secondine, and many more. Under Albiera’s careful stewardship, Prunotto has not merely regained its former glory — it has surpassed it, cementing this venerable winemaker as one of the very best that Piemonte has to offer.
