About Marchesi Antinori Tormaresca

When purchasing Tormaresca, the Antinori family’s Puglia estate, in 1998, the took a two-prong approach: the 247-acre Tenuta Bocca di Lupo... sits in Castel del Monte in the wild beauty of Murgia, and the 1,235-acre satellite called Masseria Maime in Salento, close to the Adriatic sea. Growing both indigenous and international grape varietals, Tormaresca draws from these two locations to create wines that offer a panoramic view of Puglia, while offering a finessed style that bridges traditional Italian and more modern wine profiles. As with most of Antinori's estates, Tormaresca rests in the capable hands of CEO, enologist, and winemaker Renzo Cotarella and his team, who work to craft wines that transmit the region's unusual volcanic terroir. Bocca di Lupo, the flagship Aglianico wine from Tormaresca’s Murgia site, may be the most famous of the estate’s releases, but Tormaresca also makes an entry-level red, Trentantelli, as well as Pietrabianca, a white, and Kaloro, a mineral-laden rosato; each wine represents a different facet of Puglia, one of Italy’s great undiscovered gems.

Marchesi Antinori Le Mortelle

Marchesi Antinori Le Mortelle Vivia Bianco Maremma Toscana 2022 750ml

WD92

About Marchesi Antinori Le Mortelle

Located on the Maremma Coast near the family's Guado al Tasso estate in Bolgheri, Le Mortelle was once part of a larger estate called La... Badiola, created in the nineteenth century when the Duchy drained the marshy areas around Grosseto. The Antinori family purchased Le Mortelle in 1999, and the estate’s name, which comes from the region’s plentiful wild myrrh, signals the family’s green commitment. Le Mortelle isn’t merely certified organic — it also sports a state-of-the-art cellar facility constructed with natural materials and erected deep under the earth. Built into the side of a hill, Le Mortelle’s cantina is barely visible, but its three-story structure allows for gravity to move the wine from pressing to fermentation to aging barrels, which reduces energy and treats the wine with tender loving care. Le Mortelle occupies almost 670 acres, with 420 acres under vine, and it boasts a variety of soils that range from sandy and loamy with clay and silica to rocky, pebbly, and mineral-rich. While Le Mortelle’s range of wines is small, the impact is great, and it’s only a matter of time before this Antinori estate achieves the renown it deserves.

Cantina del Taburno

Cantina del Taburno Aglianico del Taburno Fidelis 2017 750ml

Aglianico del Tabruno Fidelis 2017 The 2017 Aglianico Fidelis took me by surprise. I usually only like dry, tannic Aglianicos from Mastroberardino, for example, but I had this bottle before my... tasting on Wed. We opened it the night before with some pizza and the two of us drank the whole bottle without even realizing it. The secret of this wine? There a 10% blend of Sangiovese and Merlot that helps keep the racy and super structured Aglianico grape in check; I was floored. This simple wine drank seamlessly, was balanced, was fruit forward enough to caress the palate but not overly so. The supple, opulent quality is met with elevated acidity thanks to the vineyard altitudes ranging from 650ft to 2000ft. At $18 per bottle you get all this?? Yes please.
