About Marchesi Antinori Tormaresca

Tormaresca, the Antinori family’s Puglia estate, founded in 1998, began with two parts: the 247-acre Tenuta Bocca di Lupo, which sits in... Castel del Monte in the wild beauty of Murgia, and the 1,235-acre Masseria Maìme in Salento, close to the Adriatic Sea. In time, Antinori split these estates, bottling Bocca di Lupo as its own entity, while expanding Tormaresca to include additional inland vines at Tenuta Carrubo, located in Manduria. Growing both indigenous and international grape varietals, Tormaresca draws from these locations to create wines that offer a panoramic view of Puglia, while offering a finessed style that bridges traditional Italian and more modern wine profiles. As with most of Antinori's estates, Tormaresca and Bocca di Lupo are under the guidance of CEO, enologist, and winemaker Renzo Cotarella and his team, who work to craft wines that transmit the region's unusual volcanic terroir. Together, these sites craft a range of delicious, terroir-driven Puglian wines that pack a punch at their relatively low price points.

About Antonio Vallana e Figlio

Formally founded in 1937 in Maggiore, located at the foot of Piedmont’s Monte Rosa, the Antonio Vallana e Figlio estate has been quietly... undergoing a wonderful renaissance. The Vallana estate made its reputation on crafting the finest Nebbiolo wines in Alto Piemonte, a region that sits in a strip several miles north of Torino. In this region, Nebbiolo is known as Spanna, and the land’s elevation, acidic soils, and terrific temperature swings bring out Nebbiolo’s savory, delicate, vibrant side. Today’s Vallana estate is helmed by Francis Vallana, the grandson of founder Bernard, who is aided by his mother Giuseppina and his sisters Marina and Miriam. The estate practices organic viniculture on its steep, terraced vineyards and super-traditional viticulture in its cantina. Using ancient concrete vessels to vinify their wines and giant neutral botti to age them assures Frances and his team that Vallana’s terroir shines in every bottle. Over the past decade, Vallana has been impressing critics and amassing fans with their unique, ethereal wines that get better and better every year.

About Ornellaia

Though Ornellaia entered the Super-Tuscan field later than Sassicaia and Solaia, Ornellaia made up for lost time with global impact, and today, Ornellaia’s... flagship and other wines are hot commodities on the fine wine market. Ornellaia’s 244 acres sit in Bolgheri, just a few miles from the Tyrrhenian Sea, and the estate’s holdings are split between two parcels, a 100-acre parcel located in a natural bowl near the state-of-the-art cantina and the remaining acres in the Bellaria subzone closer to the sea. This assortment of microclimates, supported by soils that range from stony to clayey to loamy, offers ideal growing conditions to its predominantly Bordeaux-style grape varietals. Since 2005, the Frescobaldi family has owned and operated Ornellaia, and Axel Heinz has served as the company’s chief winemaker, running the Ornellaia operation with a painstaking eye for detail and dedication to his craft.

Altesino

Altesino Brunello di Montalcino 2019 750ml

WD95

About Altesino

Housed in a fifteenth-century palazzo in Montosoli, the most northern region of the Brunello region, Altesino is something of a contradiction. On the one hand,... this family-owned-and-operated estate is devoted to modernist winemaking. The Altesino team, helmed by Simone Giunti and Alessandro Ciacci, ages its finessed, layered Brunello wines in barrique — and this modernist turn began more than four decades ago. On the other hand, Altesino’s owner, Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini, who bought the estate in 2002, puts an old-school emphasis on the estate’s vines, and it sustainably tends its 247 acres (about half under vine) in order to ensure the high quality of its grapes. While Montosoli remains Altesino’s home, over the years the estate has added new parcels to its portfolio, and it now boasts six separate vineyards that range from Castelnuovo dell’Abate and Sant’Angelo in Colle in the South to Montosoli in the North. This range of terroirs not only lends richness and texture to Altesino’s wines but also allows this marque producer to grow grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and select white grapes. Always nuanced, sophisticated, and polished, Altesino’s wines are prized by Brunello fans around the world.

Marchesi Antinori Le Mortelle

Marchesi Antinori Le Mortelle Botrosecco Maremma Toscana 2022 750ml

WD93

About Le Mortelle

Located on the Maremma Coast near the family's Guado al Tasso estate in Bolgheri, Le Mortelle was once part of a larger estate called La Badiola, created in... the nineteenth century when the Duchy drained the marshy areas around Grosseto. The Antinori family purchased Le Mortelle in 1999, and the estate’s name, which comes from the region’s plentiful wild myrrh, signals the family’s green commitment. Le Mortelle isn’t merely certified organic — it also sports a state-of-the-art cellar facility constructed with natural materials and erected under the earth. Built into the side of a hill, Le Mortelle’s cantina is barely visible, but its three-story structure allows for gravity to move the wine from pressing to fermentation to aging barrels, which reduces energy and treats the wine with tender loving care. Le Mortelle occupies almost 670 acres, with 420 acres under vine, and it boasts a variety of soils that range from sandy and loamy with clay and silica to rocky, pebbly, and mineral-rich. While Le Mortelle’s range of wines is small, the impact is great, and it’s only a matter of time before this Antinori estate achieves the renown it deserves.

Marchesi Antinori Badia a Passignano Chianti Classico Gran Selezione 2021 750ml

WD93

About Badia a Passignano

One of the Antinori family of estates, Badia a Passignano sits on just over 550 acres in the heart of Chianti Classico in Sambuca Val di Pesa, a few... miles south of Antinori's Tignanello estate. Badia a Passignano has grown Sangiovese for millennia, and therefore it was a natural decision for the Antinori family to dedicate this winery to the production of Chianti Classico Gran Selezione, the crème de la crème of Chianti’s wines. Like a fairytale fortress in the heart of Chianti Classico, Badia a Passignano's stone walls rise out of a thicket of cypress trees, and this former abbey, originally built at some point between 395 and 891, has played home to the Vallombrosian order, an arm of the Benedictine monks, for centuries — in fact, the Vallombrosian monks, who specialize in viniculture and forestry, continue to live on the premises. In 1987, the Antinori family bought the land surrounding the abbey, and the Antinori family uses the abbey’s ancient cellars to age its Chianti Classico Gran Selezione.

About Sassetti Livio Pertimali

While the Sassetti family have been farmers for many generations, they’ve been working as vine-growers and winemakers for four generations. A... founding member of the Brunello Consortium in 1967, Livio Sassetti inherited his family’s passion for wine, and he wanted the chance to estate-bottle his own Brunello, so in the early 1970's he purchased his own plot of land in Montosoli and founded the Pertimali estate, named for a cottage on the property. The 39-acre Pertimalli Sassetti estate now rests in the hands of Livio’s sons, Lorenzo, and Luciano, who join him in the production of elegant, complex, and aromatic wines that marry the distinctive Montalcino terroir with the structure of Burgundy. In addition to Pertimali Sassetti, the Sassetti family of estates includes La Querciolina in Umbria and Colle Argento in Valdobbiadene.

Tenute Silvio Nardi

In 1893, Francesco Nardi left his family’s farm to seek his fortune here in the States. After great success, Francesco returned to Toscana to start his... own farm design business. In 1950, his son Silvio purchased Casale del Bosco in Montalcino, and eight years later, Silvio was among the first members of the newborn Consorzio del Vino Brunello, the ruling body of Brunello production. Silvio Nardi’s contemporary era began in 1991 when Silvio's daughter Emilia assumed control of the estate. Nardi now covers about 200 acres in two different locations, and its wines bear distinct trademarks of elegance, longevity, and silky-smooth texture. Two major parcels comprise Silvio Nardi's holdings: Casale del Bosco, whose five vineyards offer western exposure and soils of schist, shale, clay and jasper, and Manachiara, whose east-facing three parcels sport marly, sandy soils laced with limestone. Nardi wines bear distinct trademarks of elegance, longevity, and silky-smooth texture, making them favorites of in-the-know Brunello lovers.

Talenti Brunello di Montalcino 2019 750ml

About Talenti

Family-owned-and-operated, Talenti’s Pian di Conte estate is a standard-bearer of approachable, delicious Brunello that’s nonetheless age-worthy and nuanced.... Pierluigi Talenti, who came to Montalcino from his native Romagna in the 1950s, fell in love with the region’s rolling hills and sundrenched vineyards, purchasing his land in the mid-twentieth century. It’s easy to see why — located close to the medieval village of Sant’Angelo in Colle, Talenti’s 90 acres (half under vine) sit at about 1,300 feet above sea level, where they are shielded from harsh weather by nearby Mount Amiata and fanned by breezes blowing from the Tyrrhenian Sea. The estate’s 45 acres of vines come from eleven different plots, each with slightly different terroir, soil structure, and microclimates, and together, they offer a breathtaking panorama of this estate’s southern Brunello subzone. Talenti has made a reputation for consistently crafting beautiful, terroir-driven Brunello wines that pack a terrific quality-to-price punch.

Azienda Agricola La Torre

Azienda Agricola La Torre Brunello di Montalcino 2019 750ml

WD94

About La Torre

La Torre translates to "the tower," and this exciting Montalcino estate spreads across almost 90 acres in Sesti, near Sant’Angelo in Colle, though fewer than... 14 acres are under vine. Owner-winemaker Luigi Anania purchased this estate in 1976, and the winery saw its inaugural Brunello vintage in 1982, one of the truly fabled years of the last century. Luigi and his team use organic practices in the vineyard and flexibly traditional winemaking in the cellar to craft La Torre’s terroir-driven, accessible wines. The most remarkable aspect of La Torre is the elevation of its vineyards. Perched at about 1,500 feet above sea level in the southwestern Brunello subzone, these naturally terraced, limestone-rich vineyards are high enough to enjoy gentle breezes coming off the Tyrrhenian Sea, which helps La Torre’s Sangiovese Grosso grapes ripen fully, while escaping heat and dryness. La Torre’s delicious, enjoyable, and traditional Brunello wines are true gems, especially at their relatively affordable price point.

Michele Chiarlo

Michele Chiarlo Barbaresco Faset 2020 750ml

About Michele Chiarlo

Michele Chiarlo bottled his first Barolo vintage in 1958. Back then, Michele was a recent graduate of the Oenology School of Alba, and he owned no... vineyards. Michele soon realized that stringent grape quality control was the secret to making great wines, so he began leasing vineyards to ensure high quality grapes. Michele then turned his attention to purchasing the best available vineyard holdings, and he acquired plots in Barolo’s Cannubi and Cerequio, as well as Asti, where some of the finest Barbera plots later were reclassified as part of the Nizza DOCG. Today, the Michele Chiarlo estate spans more than 270 acres across Langhe, Monferrato, and Gavi, and it includes a boutique hotel in Cerequio. Michele passed away in 2023, and this family-owned estate is now run by Michele’s sons, Alberto and Stefano, who continue their father’s single-minded pursuit of growing Piemonte’s finest indigenous grapes and making wines that are as honest as they are delicious.

Prunotto

Prunotto Barbaresco Bric Turot 2021 750ml

WD94

About Marchesi Antinori Prunotto

Located in the rolling hills of Alba, Piemonte, the Prunotto estate epitomizes the timeless beauty and effortless elegance of the Langhe.... Founded in 1904, Prunotto began as a wine cooperative formed in Serralunga and presided over by Alfredo Prunotto. Beppe Colla assumed control of the estate in 1956 and expanded Prunotto’s success with a savvy strategy of researching the finest vineyard sites, purchasing the best grapes, and experimenting with cru bottlings. The Antinori family started distributing Prunotto’s wine in 1989 and assumed control of the estate in 1994. In a project spearheaded by Albiera Antinori, Prunotto recreated itself with an eye to wines defined by very specific terroir. Albiera began researching and purchasing specific vineyards, eventually amassing 161 acres that spread across the Langhe and Monferrato, with holdings in the legendary Barolo vineyards of Vigna Colonnello, Bussia, Bric Turot, as well as Barbera’s Pian Romualdo, Barbaresco’s Secondine, and many more. Under Albiera’s careful stewardship, Prunotto has not merely regained its former glory — it has surpassed it, cementing this venerable winemaker as one of the very best that Piemonte has to offer.

Giuseppe Quintarelli

Giuseppe Quintarelli Valpolicella Classico Superiore 2016 750ml

WD94

About Giuseppe Quintarelli

Since the beginning of the twentieth century, the Giuseppe Quintarelli estate has been patiently crafting game-changing wines from its 27 acres in... the Veneto. Giuseppe, or “Bepi,” seemed to be a magician, and his natural talent, along with high quality vineyards, gave the Quintarelli estate an edge. Bepi’s concept of vintage approval and strict grape selection rivaled even the great chateaux of Sauternes; he patiently let his wines rest in large Slovenian oak casks until they finished their fermentations; and he waited to release his wines until he thought they were the best they could be. Bepi died in 2012, but he trained his daughter Franca and her husband Giampaolo Grigoli to make wine as he did: wonderfully, magically, and with little fanfare. Today’s Quintarelli estate follows Bepi’s patient, high-quality, low-quantity winemaking practices — thus Quintarelli wines are always in painfully small quantity and in super-high quality. Quintarelli’s limited-production Amarones and Valpolicellas have long been the epitome of excellence, and the estate’s Primofiore, Rosso del Bepi, and Ca’ del Merlo are lesser-known, compelling beauties.
