Ada Nada Barbaresco Elisa 2018

Named after one of Annalisa and Evlio’s daughters, this traditional Barbaresco comes from vines planted in 1947 in the estate’s Rombone plot. The 2018 Barbaresco Elisa is especially expressive, framing its wild red and blue berries with fresh loam, rich spices, pressed herbs, rose petals, and a splash of cola. Tannins feel grainy and elegant, balanced by fresh acidity and persistent, earthy minerality. Enjoyable now with decanting, this wine will age nicely over the next decade. About Ada Nada

The Ada Nada estate, which sits in the Rombone subregion of Barbaresco, dates to 1919 when Carlo Nada planted his first 7.5 acres of vines. More than a century later, the family-owned-and-operated estate is still going strong, run by Annalisa and Elvio, the great-granddaughter of founder Carlo and her ex-rugby player husband. Ada Nada has grown to just over 22 acres in Treiso, and the estate has been certified organic for more than a decade. Annalisa and Elvo, who run the winery with help from their children, love its intimate size, which grows enough wine to support the family but doesn’t demand more energy than they have to give. Ada Nada is a true “in-the-know” Barbaresco estate, and its hard-to-find, limited-production wines are high quality but they don’t strain the wallet. Ada Nada’s winemaking protocol relies on a thoughtful mix of traditional with some more modern methods, and the winery crafts pure, authentic single-vineyard Barbaresco expressions, among other typical Langhe wines.

Known as the “Queen of Wines,” Barbaresco as we know it came into being more or less synchronically with Produttori del Barbaresco. A wine... collective of around 55 members, Produttori del Barbaresco began at the end of the nineteenth century with about nine vine-growers, and this group shaped Barbaresco’s identity as we know it today. The Produttori disbanded in the 1930s because of war and Italy’s fascism, but it reformed in 1958, and today this collective, which covers more than 250 acres, is arguably the finest wine collective in the world. The Produttori is dedicated to growing Nebbiolo, and in every vintage, it produces a blended Barbaresco as well as a Langhe Nebbiolo — in very fine years, the group also crafts up to nine cru Barbaresco Riserva bottlings. Consistent high quality, traditional methods, and true telegraphing of terroir work together to distinguish Produttori del Barbaresco’s wines, and Barbaresco lovers, critics, and connoisseurs can’t get enough of this collective’s remarkable, authentic wines.

Founded in 1921 by brothers Giuseppe and Giovanni Pelissero, the tiny family-owned-and-operated Pasquale Pelissero estate entered its modern era in... the 1970s when its namesake, Pasquale, began bottling his estate-grown wines. Pasquale, or Papa, was a pioneer in Barbaresco because, at that time, few other estates were bottling their own Barbaresco. Pasquale’s daughter, Ornella, started working in the vineyards when she was just 15, and she assumed control of Pasquale Pelissero in 2007 when her father suddenly passed away. Just under 20 acres in the hills around Neive, Pasquale Pelissero grows sustainably and adheres to tradition — indeed, Ornella’s only concession to modern technology is a temperature-controlled fermentation tank. Ornella and her son, Simone, do everything at Pasquale Pelissero, from maintaining the vines to vinifying their wines in their cellar that sits near the top of the Bricco San Giuliano hill. Pasquale Pelissero crafts fewer than 4,000 cases of its tradition, terroir-driven wine a year.
