Ada Nada Barbaresco Valeirano 2019
Loads of sour cherry and frutti di bosco meld with forest floor, medicinal herbs, cherry liqueur, violet petals, and earthy minerals in the 2019 Barbaresco Valeirano. Tannins are chewy yet satiny, and the wine shows seamless balance between its zesty acidity and intense dry extract. There’s a nice lift mid-palate and a lingering finish to this wonderfully accessible Barbaresco.
About Ada Nada
The Ada Nada estate, which sits in the Rombone subregion of Barbaresco, dates to 1919 when Carlo Nada planted his first 7.5 acres of vines. More than a century later, the family-owned-and-operated estate is still going strong, run by Annalisa and Elvio, the great-granddaughter of founder Carlo and her ex-rugby player husband. Ada Nada has grown to just over 22 acres in Treiso, and the estate has been certified organic for more than a decade. Annalisa and Elvo, who run the winery with help from their children, love its intimate size, which grows enough wine to support the family but doesn’t demand more energy than they have to give. Ada Nada is a true “in-the-know” Barbaresco estate, and its hard-to-find, limited-production wines are high quality but they don’t strain the wallet. Ada Nada’s winemaking protocol relies on a thoughtful mix of traditional with some more modern methods, and the winery crafts pure, authentic single-vineyard Barbaresco expressions, among other typical Langhe wines.

About Mamete Prevostini
Fewer than 50 acres in the pristine Valtellina subregion, located in northern Italy’s Lombardia, Mamete Prevostini is something of a cult superstar... in the making. The Prevostini family has been living in Valtellina’s craggy Alpine hills for generations; indeed, this family-owned-and-operated estate saw its start in the 1920s, when Mamete started making his own wine to accompany the fine food he served in his restaurant. About Bartolo Mascarello
Bartolo Mascarello was an intractable defender of traditional Barolo, the “last of the Mohicans,” in his words. Bartolo made Barolos that... gorgeously embodied their vintage and their terroir, and these supple, powerful, and nuanced wines have captivated their fans for generations. Since Bartolo’s passing in 2005, his daughter Maria Teresa Mascarello has helmed the cantina at 15 Via Roma, the legendary site of the Bartolo Mascarello estate since its founding in 1918, and under her leadership, Mascarello’s Barolo, Dolcetto, and Barbera have grown even finer, subtler, more detailed, and spellbinding. While the Mascarello estate sports enviable holdings in Cannubi, San Lorenzo and Rué, located in the commune of Barolo, as well as in La Morra’s Rocche in the commune of La Morra, it still has never released a cru wine. Blending, Bartolo believed, provided balance, especially in challenging vintages. Maria Teresa sees no reason to change her father’s ways (or those of his father, and his before him).
