    Will Di Nunzio 93

Castiglion del Bosco Brunello di Montalcino 2013

When this 2013 Brunello saw release, critics saw a bold, beautiful future in its rich fruits, brocade-like texture, and wonderful rose-petal aromatics. A decade later, this gorgeous Brunello is showing its potential, unwrapping its many layers to reveal a tapestry of pure Sangiovese fruits surrounded by worn saddle leather, crushed rose petals, pipe tobacco, pressed wild herbs, and touches of tea and tar. Silky tannins slide effortlessly across the palate, while the wine’s elegant mineral core and fresh acidity keep it lively — this Castiglion del Bosco wine is a treat for fans of mature Brunello! [Will Di Nunzio, 10/05/2023]

    Description

    About Castiglion del Bosco

Located in the northwest of Montalcino, Castiglion del Bosco is something very special. This estate, purchased by Massimo Ferragamo in 2003, is surrounded by the Val d’Orcia Parco Naturale, a protected natural preserve. Beyond its pristine location, Castiglion del Bosco has a history that goes back to 600 BC, and the estate was one of the founding members of the Brunello Consortium. Castiglion del Bosco boasts 153 acres of vineyards in two sites, the 50-acre Gauggiole in the north and the 103-acre Capanna vineyard in the south. Gauggiole sports clayey, rocky soils that grow fresh, robust Brunello berries primarily used in the estate’s Rosso di Montalcino, while Capanna’s rocky, gravelly vines see greater diurnal temperature changes that makes its grapes perfect for the winery’s complex, vibrant Brunello. Winemaker Cecilia Leoneschi works diligently to preserve terroir, local traditions, and a strong connection to the soil in making her expressive, elegant wines. An ancient estate with a regal history, Castiglion del Bosco sees a bright, beautiful future with its wines that honor tradition and while appealing to a broad range of sophisticated palates.

    Azienda Agricola La Torre

Azienda Agricola La Torre Brunello di Montalcino 2017 750ml

    WD92

    About Azienda Agricola La Torre

"La Torre" translates to "the tower," and this exciting Montalcino estate spreads across almost 90 acres in Sesti, near Sant’Angelo in Colle,... though fewer than 14 acres are under vine. Owner-winemaker Luigi Anania purchased this estate in 1976, and the winery saw its inaugural Brunello vintage in 1982, one of the truly fabled years of the last century. Anania and his team use non-interventionist practices in the vineyard and traditional winemaking in the cellar to craft La Torre’s terroir-driven, accessible wines. The most remarkable aspect of La Torre is the elevation of its vineyards. Perched at about 1,500 feet above sea level in the southwestern Brunello subzone, these naturally terraced, limestone-rich vineyards are high enough to enjoy gentle breezes coming off the Tyrrhenian Sea, which helps La Torre’s Sangiovese Grosso grapes ripen fully, while escaping heat and dryness. La Torre’s delicious, enjoyable, and traditional Brunello wines are true gems, especially at their relatively affordable price point.

    Il Poggione

Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino 2018 750ml

    WD94

    About Il Poggione

Founded near the end of the nineteenth century, Il Poggione’s modern age began in 1958, when Leopoldo Franceschi, grandfather of the current owner, engaged... renowned winemaker Pierluigi Talenti as the estate’s winemaker. Pierluigi made the most of Il Poggione’s considerable natural gifts for 40 years, shaping the estate’s muscular, graceful, and aromatic house style as he trained Fabrizio Bindocci, who assumed control of the estate in 1999, and he now runs the estate with his son, Alessandro. Nestled in the southern Brunello subzone in the hills around Sant’Angelo in Colle, Il Poggione’s 1,482 acres (302 planted to vine) possess some astonishing terroir. Today’s Il Poggione grows its grapes with non-interventionist methods, and it crafts its wines in its state-of-the-art cantina using traditional methods, including aging its wines in large oak vats in its underground cellar. One of the great authentic Brunello makers, Il Poggione’s wines consistently over-perform both in the cellar and on the table.

    Cerbaia

Cerbaia Brunello di Montalcino 2018 750ml

    WD94

    About Azienda Agricola Cerbaia

Located above the fog line high on the Montosoli hill just north of Montalcino, Cerbaia is neither very large nor very old. This organic 29-acre... estate (fewer than 11 acres under vine) was founded in 1978, but despite its relative youth and diminutive size, Cerbaia is one of Brunello’s rising stars and definitely an estate to watch! Agronomist Fabio Pellegrini chose Montosoli for his estate because he saw tremendous potential in the subregion’s galestro soil because this clayey, rocky dirt was ideal for the cultivation of small-berried, thick-skinned Brunello grapes. Fabio ran Cerbaia until 2014, which his daughter, Elena, assumed control. In trading her career in finance for that of a winemaker, Elena was making a big life change, but her gamble is paying off. Cerbaia may average only 1,500 cases of Brunello every vintage, but eyes are on Cerbaia’s wines. Traditional, aromatic, long-aging, and terroir-driven, Cerbaia’s Brunello releases have everything to please the wine’s many, many fans!

About Marchesi Antinori Pian delle Vigne

Owned by the Antinori family since 1995, Pian delle Vigne covers more than 450 acres (160 planted to vine), and its under-the-radar... Brunello wines are as delectable as they are well made. Pian delle Vigne sits about 3.5 miles southwest of the town of Montalcino above the Val d’Orcia, and its lands possess ideal terroir for Brunellos that fit the Antinori’s house style. With its southwest-facing vineyards with mineral rich clay-and-loam soils that rest at an elevation of about 420 feet above sea level, Pian delle Vigne easily grows Sangiovese Grosso that’s softer, easier, and more accessible. The Pian delle Vigne team, helmed by enologist Renzo Cotarella, uses a combination of modern and traditional methods to craft its terroir-driven Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino, fermenting the grapes in stainless steel, employing a malolactic fermentation period, and aging in an array of sizes of large oak barrels. Showcasing the Antinori’s trademark profile that puts deliciousness at the forefront, Pian delle Vigne’s Brunello wines have won a reputation for being balanced, refined, long-aging expressions that nonetheless allow for earlier approachability.

    Sassetti Livio Pertimali

Sassetti Livio Pertimali Brunello di Montalcino 2017 750ml

    About Sassetti Livio Pertimali

While the Sassetti family have been farmers for many generations, they’ve been working as vine-growers and winemakers for four generations.... A founding member of the Brunello Consortium in 1967, Livio Sassetti inherited his family’s passion for wine, and he wanted the chance to estate-bottle his own Brunello, so in the early 1970's he purchased his own plot of land in Montosoli and founded the Pertimali estate, named for a cottage on the property. The 39-acre Pertimalli Sassetti estate now rests in the hands of Livio’s sons, Lorenzo and Luciano, who join him in the production of elegant, complex, and aromatic wines that marry the distinctive Montalcino terroir with the structure of Burgundy. In addition to Pertimali Sassetti, the Sassetti family of estates includes La Querciolina in Umbria and Colle Argento in Valdobbiadene.
