In 1860, Alphonse Gros bought the famed Vosne-Romanée monopole Clos des Réas, little knowing that seven generations later his legacy would carry on. Seven generations later, Domaine Michel Gros proudly makes wine in that magical monopole, and this family estate stands as one of the finest makers of intense, nicely structured Burgundy. The Gros family has been making wine in the Côte d’Or for more than 150 years, but in 1978, Michel Gros founded his estate with land inherited from his father, Jean. In 1995, Michel assumed control of Jean’s vineyards, later expanding his holdings with additional land in Vosne -Romanée, Nuits-Saint-Georges, and Hautes-Côtes de Nuits. Michel made standard-bearing wines that were beloved by critics and commoners alike, and he won the prize for International Wine Challenge’s Red Winemaker of the Year two years in a row, 2008 and 2009. In 2019, Michel decided to retire, and his son Pierre took control of the 56-acre Michel Gros estate. There’s little doubt that Pierre will rise to the challenge and maintain the high quality that has been the hallmark of Domaine Michel Gros.
