    Will Di Nunzio 94

    Fuligni Brunello di Montalcino 2017

Lush yet detailed, fruit-laden but earthy, and wonderfully textured, Fuligni’s 2017 Brunello is a standout in its vintage. This finely made Brunello is a study in patience as it slowly unfolds to reveal layer upon layer of notes: rich plums and berries give way to rose petals, irony minerals, crushed wild herbs, cedar, licorice, and fresh-turned loam. Grainy tannins snuggle the palate and loads of dry extract provide tantalizing texture while elegant acidity provides energy and focus. Just entering its drinking window now, this terrific Brunello will mature nicely over the next decade or two. [Will Di Nunzio, 10/24/2024]

    Description

    About Fuligni

Founded by Giovanni Maria Fuligni at the start of the twentieth century upon lands that had belonged to his family for centuries, the Fuligni estate sits in the northeastern Brunello subregion, where it makes some of Montalcino’s most delicious, transparent, and elegant wines. The Fuligni estate’s biggest strongpoint is its land — about 247 acres, of which about 32 acres is under vine. Fuligni sports impressive holdings: northeast-facing vineyards pitched at 1,250-1,480 feet above sea level, mineral-rich galestro soils for the estate’s Sangiovese vines, clay-rich soil for its plot of Merlot, sixteenth-century cellars below the Fuligni family’s home seat for making the estate’s line of six wines, and a restored former convent for aging them. Roberto Guerrini Fuligni helms the estate with his aunt, Maria Flora Fuligni, who assumed the estate’s reins when her father, Giovanni, passed away in 1971. Jacopo Vagaggini serves as enologist, and under his thoughtful care, Fuligni’s naturally low yields are reduced further, which helps terroir shine. The Fuligni team blends international and traditional protocol to craft its wines, allowing the estate’s Brunello, Brunello Riserva, Rosso di Montalcino, and Super Tuscans to age in a variety of barriques and vats, all the better to elicit the finest profile. A Brunello producer with an enviable track record, even in difficult years, Fuligni makes wines that are easy to enjoy, share, and love.

    About Mamete Prevostini

Fewer than 50 acres in the pristine Valtellina subregion, located in northern Italy’s Lombardia, Mamete Prevostini is something of a cult superstar... in the making. The Prevostini family has been living in Valtellina’s craggy Alpine hills for generations; indeed, this family-owned-and-operated estate saw its start in the 1920s, when Mamete started making his own wine to accompany the fine food he served in his restaurant. In addition to its award-winning Chiavennasca bottlings, Prevostini also crafts a range of whites and rosés, which derive from lower altitude vineyards. Prevostini grows its grapes sustainably, and it vinifies its wines in its state-of-the-art carbon-neutral cantina, aging them in natural crotti, of caves, which dot the region. Winemaker-owner Mamete Prevostini, grandson of the founder, sees his natural — and naturally delicious — winemaking as a commitment to nature and to tradition. Remarkable expressions of their Dolomite terroir, Prevostini’s wines evoke the clear mountain air, sparkling sunshine, and rare alpine microclimates.

    Bartolo Mascarello Barolo 2014 750ml

    About Bartolo Mascarello

Bartolo Mascarello was an intractable defender of traditional Barolo, the “last of the Mohicans,” in his words. Bartolo made Barolos that... gorgeously embodied their vintage and their terroir, and these supple, powerful, and nuanced wines have captivated their fans for generations. Since Bartolo’s passing in 2005, his daughter Maria Teresa Mascarello has helmed the cantina at 15 Via Roma, the legendary site of the Bartolo Mascarello estate since its founding in 1918, and under her leadership, Mascarello’s Barolo, Dolcetto, and Barbera have grown even finer, subtler, more detailed, and spellbinding. While the Mascarello estate sports enviable holdings in Cannubi, San Lorenzo and Rué, located in the commune of Barolo, as well as in La Morra’s Rocche in the commune of La Morra, it still has never released a cru wine. Blending, Bartolo believed, provided balance, especially in challenging vintages. Maria Teresa sees no reason to change her father’s ways (or those of his father, and his before him). After all, there’s no improving upon perfection.
