Rockstar winemaker Angelo Gaja has always known terrific terroir when he saw it. In 1979, Angelo had a chance to buy a 25-acre vineyard located in Pajorè, one of Trieso’s prime Barbaresco sites, from Giovannini Moresco, whose small estate released some of Barbaresco’s most finely made, low production wines. While the Moresco estate is no longer a standalone entity, the Gaja team will occasionally bottle the Pajorè grapes separately as a cru wine; however, the grapes most commonly appear in the estate’s cuvee Barbaresco, or in Sito Moresco, a rare Super-Piemontese blend. Named for the plot’s original owner, Sito Moresco is an unusual blend of Nebbiolo with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and sometimes Barbera; this unique mix of traditional Italian and international grapes gives Gaja fans a delicious, uncommon drinking experience that also delivers quality far beyond its modest price point.
