About Giacomo Conterno
Giovanni Conterno founded his estate in 1908, and in 1924 he made the first Barolo Monfortino, named for his home village of Monforte d’Alba, from grapes purchased from trusted growers. His son, Giacomo, inherited his father’s drive to make a serious, long-aging wine (Giacomo’s brother, Aldo Conterno, shared inheritance of the estate, but split in 1969 to form his own estate). In 1974, Giacomo purchased the Cascina Francia vineyard, the famed southwestern-facing 40-acre plot that is home to Barolo Francia and Barolo Monfortino. Upon Giacomo’s passing in 2004, son Roberto assumed control, continuing his father’s legacy of crafting traditional wines of tremendous longevity and unparalleled quality. Roberto added to the estate’s lands by purchasing the historic Cerretta vineyard, as well as plots located in Serralunga’s Rionda, Gabutti, and Arione crus. Giacomo Conterno is known for its profoundly nuanced, deeply aromatic, almost painfully long-aging Barolo wines, as well as some of the finest Barbera, Dolcetto, and Langhe Nebbiolo bottlings available. A proud member of the Piemonte old guard, Giacomo Conterno sets the standard for traditional, age-worthy Barolo.
