Giuseppe Mascarello founded his eponymous estate in 1881, but its modern era began in 1904 when Giuseppe’s son Maurizio bought land in nearby Castiglione Falletto. This purchase included a parcel of the Monprivato vineyard, which Maurizio planted to a special clone of the Nebbiolo grape, Michét, a refined clone of Piemonte’s emblematic grape. Maurizio’s sons Giuseppe and Natale took over in 1923, when they divided the vineyard holdings. Giuseppe invested in vineyard development and cantina quality, and he replanted with the Michét clone, which was originally introduced by his father. Upon retirement, Giuseppe’s son, Mauro, assumed control of the estate, and here he remains, now aided by his daughter, Elena, and son. Giuseppe. One of the last remaining “old guard” winemakers, Mauro still makes its Barolos with extended fermentations and aging in old botti.
