While Guastaferro has been growing grapes for hundreds of years — and this family-owned-and-operated has a plot of 200-year-old Aglianico vines to prove it — they’ve been bottling their own wines only since 2000. The Guastaferro estate is located in the heart of the Taurasi region of Campania, and for as long as anyone can recall, they grew Aglianico for such legendary wineries as Mastroberardino and Feudi di San Gregorio. When Raffaele Guastaferro took control of his father’s estate, he decided to change that practice, and he began estate-bottling his own Taurasi wines, as well as a limited production of Greco di Tufo. Guastaferro’s nineteen acres of vines grow in volcanic ash sand, which both allowed their Aglianico to survive the phylloxera outbreak of the late nineteenth century and creates distinct terroir. In fact, all of Guastaferro’s Aglianico vines are either pre-phylloxera or grafted from pre-phylloxera vines, and this imparts tremendous aging potential and intense complexity to the estate’s wines. Multifaceted, layered, and ethereal, Guastaferro’s wines are very special.
