Hervieux-Dumez: Like many great wineries in Europe, Hervieux-Dumez was born out of passion, a need, a little luck and the hard work of a French family from the small town of Sacy. Founder Henri Hervieux returned to his native land in France after serving in WWI and, like many, got involved in wine sales. After some time in England to learn the language he would move back to Sacy, marry Juliette Dumez in 1920 and establish their estate Hervieux-Dumez. With a lot of hard work and the help of his whole family they managed to get this little winery off the ground and by the 1960s, they were rebuilding the cellars and were selling their wines on the grand wine stages of France. Today’s featured wine, the 2014 Hervieux-Dumez Brut Club Millésimé, like the Joseph Loriot-Pagel is made exclusively for the Club Tresors de Champagne (the Special Club) and cannot be purchased with ease in the US. This 50% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir and 20% Meunier bottling is packed with powerful aromas that confirm its mineral character. With superb notes of dried fruit, walnuts and grilled hazelnuts appearing after airing, the wine continues to reveal subtle notes of gingerbread. Fresh, lifted with toasted notes throughout, the beautiful line of acidity throughout this 2014 is a Champagne lover’s dream.
