Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino 2018
A Brunello that was tailormade for fans of wines with smoky, flinty profiles, Il Poggione’s 2018 Brunello is a knockout. The estate chose not to bottle its famed Brunello Riserva in 2018, so this wine represents the best fruit from this rollercoaster vintage. Succulent forest berries and dark cherries are framed by smoky minerals, balsamic herbs, peppery spices, black licorice, and orange zest. Robust tannins are nonetheless silky, and this wine oscillates between rustic weightiness and glossy elegance. Enjoyable now with decanting, this 2018 Brunello has the stuffing to age for decades.
