La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva 890 2010
Five vintages have come and gone since 2005 when La Rioja Alta last bottled its regal Gran Reserva 890, but the wait was worth it. This benchmark 2010 strikes a new high-water mark for this legendary wine! Layers and layers of black plums, cherries, and brooding berries are framed with seductive notes of forest floor, balsamic herbs, mocha, white truffles, and whiffs of cigar ash and game. This wine possesses a soaring, architectural structure with silky tannins, fine acidity, loads of dry extract, and sneaky saline minerality that threads its way through the palate and resonates on the lingering finish. A blend of 95% Tempranillo, 3% Graciano, and 2% Mazuelo that sits in American oak for six years before bottling, this wine has serious longevity, but if you want to drink it now, give it a liberal decant.
