Le Potazzine is not your typical Brunello estate. Established in 1993 on just seven acres in the wooded hills near the town of Montalcino, Le Potazzine got a relatively late start, in a location that was viewed as undesirable, and it was founded by a woman, Gigliola Giannetti. The past three decades have shown Gigliola to be a visionary as Le Potazzine has racked up international awards and won the hearts of savvy Brunello collectors. Weather patterns have changed so that the estate’s original acres, once judged too chilly and windy, to provide ideal conditions for the organic cultivation of Sangiovese Grosso, and the addition of another five acres near Sant’Angelo in Colle provide ripe balance when vintages need it. Le Potazzine, named for a local term of endearment for grandchildren, is still run by Gigliola, who gets help from her daughters, Viola and Sofia, along with enologist Roberta Tiberi, and together the woman-run Le Potazzine estate crafts around 3,000 cases of its authentic, terroir-driven Brunello, Rosso di Montalcino, and Sangiovese bottlings.
