    Will Di Nunzio 95

Le Ragnaie Brunello di Montalcino 2019

Classic, restrained, and dusky, this 2019 Brunello from Le Ragnaie is an absolute stunner. Layers and layers of forest berries, plums, and cherries slowly unfold, framed by warm baking spices, rose petals, wild herbs, and cigar wrapper. An unmistakably elegant Brunello, this wine has everything in place: muscular tannins, electric acidity, fine dry extract, satisfying minerals, and a finish that lasts for minutes. Enjoyable now with liberal aeration, this wine will drink for well over a decade. [Will Di Nunzio, 04/29/2024]

    Description

    About Le Ragnaie

Le Ragnaie spans almost 70 acres (about 38 planted to vine) that teem with wildlife, birds, and natural beauty. Riccardo and Jennifer Campinoti purchased Le Ragnaie in 2002, and since that time, the estate has been on an upward trajectory. Le Ragnaie gets its name from “ragnatela,” the Italian word for spiderweb and the shape of traditional bird-catching nets, a nod to the desperate poverty that Montalcino experienced prior to its wine renaissance, when locals relied on catching birds for food. Fortunes changed, however, as Brunello found a following. Le Ragnaie has three vineyard parcels: Le Ragnaie in the central zone; Petroso, located just below the village of Montalcino; and Castelnuovo dell’Abate, located in the South of Montalcino in the foothills of Mount Amiata. Many of Le Ragnaie’s acres once rested above the elevation that DOCG allowed for Brunello, but in 2016, Italian wine’s ruling body raised elevation limits, so Le Ragnaie can now use its high elevation vineyards to craft its high-toned, finessed, and deeply elegant wines. The Le Ragnaie team is deeply committed to preserving the natural beauty of Montalcino and grows its grapes organically and biodynamically, while using very traditional vinification techniques in making its superb Brunello bottlings.

    Mamete Prevostini

Mamete Prevostini Sassella Valtellina Superiore ‘Marena’ 2016 750ml

    AVG91

    About Mamete Prevostini

Fewer than 50 acres in the pristine Valtellina subregion, located in northern Italy’s Lombardia, Mamete Prevostini is something of a cult superstar... in the making. The Prevostini family has been living in Valtellina’s craggy Alpine hills for generations; indeed, this family-owned-and-operated estate saw its start in the 1920s, when Mamete started making his own wine to accompany the fine food he served in his restaurant. In addition to its award-winning Chiavennasca bottlings, Prevostini also crafts a range of whites and rosés, which derive from lower altitude vineyards. Prevostini grows its grapes sustainably, and it vinifies its wines in its state-of-the-art carbon-neutral cantina, aging them in natural crotti, of caves, which dot the region. Winemaker-owner Mamete Prevostini, grandson of the founder, sees his natural — and naturally delicious — winemaking as a commitment to nature and to tradition. Remarkable expressions of their Dolomite terroir, Prevostini’s wines evoke the clear mountain air, sparkling sunshine, and rare alpine microclimates.

    Castello Bonomi

Castello Bonomi Franciacorta Brut CruPerdu DOCG NV 1.5L

    WD92

    About Castello Bonomi

The Paladin family, who has been making estate-bottled wine for about 60 years, owns several estates across Italy, from the Veneto to Tuscany, but... perhaps their most famous and most distinct is Castello Bonomi, in Lombardy’s Franciacorta region. With vinicultural history that dates back to medieval Benedictine monks, Franciacorta spans about 5,400 acres, but this rare northern Italian region is devoted to one unique style of wine: the best champagne-styled sparklers that you can find outside of France — indeed, it’s the sole DOCG region that permits classic méthode champenoise sparklers. The family-owned-and-operated Castello Bonomi estate is housed in a gorgeous art deco villa built in the late nineteenth century, and the estate’s vineyards sit on 60 steeply pitched acres in a natural amphitheater that rests at the foot of Mount Orfano. These terraced vineyards enjoy a privileged microclimate that includes limestone-rich soils, southern exposures, excellent drainage, and pure sunlight. These elements provide the raw materials that Castello Bonomi’s Chardonnay and Pinot Nero grapes need, while a strict green harvest, low yields, and stringent grape sorting help the estate’s team craft a range of terroir-driven, award-winning Franciacorta wines.

    Montevertine

Montevertine Rosso Toscana IGT 2019 750ml

    About Montevertine

Just under 50 acres located in and around the rolling hills of Radda in the Chianti Classico region, Montevertine has made a powerful impact on the global... wine landscape with its cult mono-varietal bottling, Le Pergole Torte, but even more than that glowing achievement, Montevertine has exerted a kind of gravitational pull over the entire Chianti region because of its staunch adherence to traditional indigenous grapes, especially Sangiovese. Founder Sergio Manetti wasn’t looking to shift the Tuscan winemaking landscape when he bought the lands that would become Montevertine in 1967, but he planted about five acres of Sangiovese, made some wine for friends, and sent a couple of bottles off to Vinitaly as a lark. The wine was a hit, and Montevertine was born. Today, Montevertine, helmed by Sergio’s son, Martino, spans nine organically tended vineyard parcels, with the majority planted to Sangiovese, and it crafts three wines. Montevertine’s position has shifted from new guard to vanguard, and wine-lovers around the globe await every new release with bated breath.

    Giuseppe Rinaldi Barolo Cannubi S.Lorenzo – Ravera 2007 750ml

    WD95

    About Giuseppe Rinaldi

Known to his peers as “Citrico,” or the acerbic one, Giuseppe Rinaldi, who died in 2018, held fast to his strong opinions. Beppe believed in growing... his grapes organically, and though he was one of the founders of ViniVeri, the natural Italian wine consortium, he never bothered to get his wines certified organic. Despite the fad for cru expressions — and despite owning parcels in three of Barolo’s best sites, Cannubi, Brunate, Le Coste, and Ravera — Beppe believed in the primacy of blended Barolo. Literally turning his back on fashion, Beppe had a barrique turned into a chair, affixing a sign saying that this was the only good use for barrique. Above all, Beppe believed in traditional, ultra-long-aging Barolo, and he made his wine as his grandfather did, fermenting in tini, or tall oak vats, using no temperature control, relying on manual punch downs, and aging his wines in giant botti for years. After his passing, Beppe’s daughters, Carlotta and Marta, assumed control of the estate, and they continue to make wines that their father, their grandfather, and their great-grandfather would recognize. Giuseppe Rinaldi crafts serious, timeless, remarkable Barolo, Barbera, Langhe Nebbiolo and other quintessentially Piemontese bottlings — some things will never change, and for this, the wine world is grateful.

    Bartolo Mascarello

    Bartolo Mascarello Barolo 2004 1.5L

    About Bartolo Mascarello

Bartolo Mascarello was an intractable defender of traditional Barolo, the “last of the Mohicans,” in his words. Bartolo made Barolos that... gorgeously embodied their vintage and their terroir, and these supple, powerful, and nuanced wines have captivated their fans for generations. Since Bartolo’s passing in 2005, his daughter Maria Teresa Mascarello has helmed the cantina at 15 Via Roma, the legendary site of the Bartolo Mascarello estate since its founding in 1918, and under her leadership, Mascarello’s Barolo, Dolcetto, and Barbera have grown even finer, subtler, more detailed, and spellbinding. While the Mascarello estate sports enviable holdings in Cannubi, San Lorenzo and Rué, located in the commune of Barolo, as well as in La Morra’s Rocche in the commune of La Morra, it still has never released a cru wine. Blending, Bartolo believed, provided balance, especially in challenging vintages. Maria Teresa sees no reason to change her father’s ways (or those of his father, and his before him). After all, there’s no improving upon perfection.
