Le Ragnaie V.V. Vigna Vecchia Brunello di Montalcino 2019
V.V. or “Vigna Vecchia” means “old vines,” and Le Ragnaie sources this Brunello from vines planted in 1968 at the highest elevations of the vineyard. Befitting its old-vine status, this Brunello is almost incomprehensibly complex, weaving together floral scents like rose petals and lilacs with herbal notes of tarragon and mint along with crunchy pomegranate, juicy cherries, and wild strawberries. Earthy, saline minerality complicates this palate, adding to the tension that drives this gorgeously built wine. You’re going to want to let this stunner rest in the cellar — the framework of muscular, powdery tannins and bright acidity that underlie all that wonderful Brunello dry extract needs a few years to soften, but in time this wine will be majestic.
