Working with protocol that strides the line between modernist and traditional, Barolisto Luciano Sandrone took his time perfecting his house style, but when his 1989 and 1990 vintages saw release, his wines hit the big time. Today, the Sandrone estate, helmed by Luciano’s daughter, Barbara, along with his brother, Luca, and other family members, spans about 66 acres in two different Piemonte regions — Barolo in the Langhe and Valmaggiore in Roero — and from these organically tended vineyards, the estate crafts six red wines, four made with Nebbiolo, as well as a Barbera and a Dolcetto. While Sandrone uses modern techniques like shorter maceration times and aging its Barolos in some barrique, Sandrone’s wines manage to balance modern approachability with traditional longevity with remarkable grace. The estate has built upon its reputation for age-worthiness by reserving a portion of its best wines for its Sibi et Paucis releases, holding back some of its Barolo for a decade and some of its Valmaggiore for six years in very good vintages.
