Tucked away in Canavese, a township in the province of Turin that borders the Valle d’Aosta in northwest Piedmont, sits the Luigi Ferrando winery, founded in 1890. As in the world-famous Barolo and Barbaresco, this Piedmont region devotes itself to Nebbiolo and Roero, but the high-altitude terroir in Canavese is very different, which makes for unique interpretations of these familiar grapes. Family-owned-and-operated for five generations, the Luigi Ferrando estate is devoted to traditional wines that showcase their terroir, and the winery releases a trio of Nebbiolo interpretations, each with its own style. Along with Nebbiolo and Roero, Ferrando grows Erbaluce, another indigenous Piemontese grape, and Ferrando’s dry, bright, complex and elegant Erbaluce bottlings set the standard for the grape. Owner Luigi has turned the estate over to his son Roberto, who runs the estate with his sister Andrea, and together the family winery continues to impress their fervent fan base with their authentic, delicious, and startlingly pure wines.
