Breganze is an Italian wine region that’s so small and obscure that it flies under the radar of most connoisseurs, which makes it an ideal place to for aspiring collectors and even Italian wine newbies to start exploring. Located in the northwest corner of the Veneto, Breganze’s winemaking is a fascinating mix of indigenous and international grapes, techniques, and styles, and one of the region’s best producers in Maculan, a family-owned-and-operated estate founded in 1947. Just under 100 acres that includes both estate-owned property and leased plots owned by trusted vine-growers, Maculan makes the most of its unique limestone-rich, volcanic vineyards, which are planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Tai, and Vespaiolo; the winery’s state-of-the-art cellar employs a mixture of traditional and international protocol in making the estate’s range of white, red, and dessert wines. While patriarch Fausto Maculan remains at the head of this estate, his daughters, Angela and Maria Vittoria, are poised to assume control of the estate.
