    Will Di Nunzio 94

    Castello della Sala Muffato 2022

Castello della Sala knocked it out of the park with their 2022 Muffato. This luscious dessert wine holds an impeccable balance of acidic freshness and tropical fruits so juicy that they’re almost dripping. Layers of green grapes, lychees, pineapple slices, and Meyer lemons mingle with candied ginger, buttery caramel, mint, and saffron in this weighty, creamy Muffato. Terrific vibrance, saline minerals, subtle florals, and honeyed fruits come together with energy and nuance in this endlessly delightful Muffato vintage. [Will Di Nunzio, 04/16/2025]

    Description

    Marchese Antinori Castello della Sala

The stone fortress that serves as the namesake for Umbria’s Castello della Sala was built in 1350, but the modern age for this estate began in 1940, when Marchese Niccolò Antinori purchased the 1,200-acre estate (495 acres planted to vine). In the late 1970s, Piero Antinori, son of Niccolò, felt inspired to create an age-worthy, complex white wine, so he joined forces with Umbrian native Renzo Cotarella, who had recently joined the Castello della Sala team. After years of tinkering, experimenting, and eureka moments, the estate’s flagship white, Cervaro della Sala was born, which saw its debut with the 1985 vintage, and a new Italian wine icon was born. But Castello della Sala isn’t limited to high quality whites; the estate’s vineyards sport fossil-rich calcareous-clay soils that, while ideal for white grape varietals, also makes for spectacular Pinot Noir. Today’s Castello della Sala crafts a range of wines that include multiple whites and reds, as well as Muffato della Sala, a showstopping dessert wine.

    Castello Bonomi

Castello Bonomi Franciacorta Brut CruPerdu DOCG NV 1.5L

    WD92

    About Castello Bonomi

The Paladin family, who has been making estate-bottled wine for about 60 years, owns several estates across Italy, from the Veneto to Tuscany, but... perhaps their most famous and most distinct is Castello Bonomi, in Lombardy’s Franciacorta region. With vinicultural history that dates back to medieval Benedictine monks, Franciacorta spans about 5,400 acres, but this rare northern Italian region is devoted to one unique style of wine: the best champagne-styled sparklers that you can find outside of France — indeed, it’s the sole DOCG region that permits classic méthode champenoise sparklers. The family-owned-and-operated Castello Bonomi estate is housed in a gorgeous art deco villa built in the late nineteenth century, and the estate’s vineyards sit on 60 steeply pitched acres in a natural amphitheater that rests at the foot of Mount Orfano. These terraced vineyards enjoy a privileged microclimate that includes limestone-rich soils, southern exposures, excellent drainage, and pure sunlight. These elements provide the raw materials that Castello Bonomi’s Chardonnay and Pinot Nero grapes need, while a strict green harvest, low yields, and stringent grape sorting help the estate’s team craft a range of terroir-driven, award-winning Franciacorta wines.

    Bartolo Mascarello

    Bartolo Mascarello Barolo 2014 750ml

    About Bartolo Mascarello

Bartolo Mascarello was an intractable defender of traditional Barolo, the “last of the Mohicans,” in his words. Bartolo made Barolos that... gorgeously embodied their vintage and their terroir, and these supple, powerful, and nuanced wines have captivated their fans for generations. Since Bartolo’s passing in 2005, his daughter Maria Teresa Mascarello has helmed the cantina at 15 Via Roma, the legendary site of the Bartolo Mascarello estate since its founding in 1918, and under her leadership, Mascarello’s Barolo, Dolcetto, and Barbera have grown even finer, subtler, more detailed, and spellbinding. While the Mascarello estate sports enviable holdings in Cannubi, San Lorenzo and Rué, located in the commune of Barolo, as well as in La Morra’s Rocche in the commune of La Morra, it still has never released a cru wine. Blending, Bartolo believed, provided balance, especially in challenging vintages. Maria Teresa sees no reason to change her father’s ways (or those of his father, and his before him). After all, there’s no improving upon perfection.

    Poderi Aldo Conterno

Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Granbussia 2006 1.5L

    About Poderi Aldo Conterno

Poderi Aldo Conterno rose to fame by crafting some of the best-known, best-loved cru Barolo expressions in its Barolo Romirasco, Colonnello, and... Cicala, as well as its Chardonnay Bussiador and its Quartetto, a red wine that blends Nebbiolo with international grapes. In 1969, Aldo Conterno famously parted ways with his brother at their father’s estate, Giacomo Conterno, and founded Poderi Aldo Conterno in the “Favot” cellar on 61 acres in Bussia of Monforte d'Alba, the heart of Barolo country. Aldo’s vision was to craft wines that blended traditional structure, grace, and longevity with exquisitely transparent terroir, seductive juiciness, and a clearly defined personality. Before his death in 2012, Aldo achieved all this and more, creating a winemaking legacy that set him apart as one of the world’s greatest winemakers. The Aldo Conterno estate continues Aldo’s remarkable winemaking work in the hands of his three sons, Franco, Stefano, and Giacomo.
