    Will Di Nunzio 94

Paolo Bea San Valentino Rosso Umbria IGT 2019

Aromatic and intense, silky and structured, vibrant and nuanced, the 2019 San Valentino Rosso is a very special wine. Layers of cassis, wild blueberries, and sun-warmed plums dance against a backdrop of Christmas spices, crushed mint, saddle leather, melted chocolate, and tobacco leaf. Textured, grainy tannins cling to the cheeks as this wine’s driving freshness and lively mineral thrum bring energy and focus. There’s a nice floral lift that ushers in the lingering finish. A blend of 70% Sangiovese, 15% Sagrantino, and 15% Montepulciano, this San Valentino is enjoyable now and over the next ten years. [Will Di Nunzio, 07/29/2025]

    About Paolo Bea

Founded more than 400 years ago, the family-owned-and-operated Paolo Bea estate has long been a standard bearer of the Italian Slow Food Movement, and its motto is “Nature should be observed, listened to and integrated, not dominated. Wine is not made by man but generated by nature!” Because of this dedication to natural agriculture and winemaking, Bea’s team nurtures its grapes with organic, non-interventionist practices, and it continues that reliance on nature in the cellar, crafting its wines without temperature control and without any additives, yeasts, fining or filtration. Paolo Bea passed away in 2024, as did his son Giuseppe, who had helped run the estate; however, Paolo had trained his winemaker son Giampiero in his ways of natural winegrowing. Aside from helming Paolo Bea, Giampiero served as president of the Italian natural wine society Viniveri for years, and he also advises other estates on making wines as natural as his own. The Bea estate purposefully keeps its production low — so low that demand for its exceptional reds and outrageous whites always exceed supply.

    Castello Bonomi

Castello Bonomi Franciacorta Brut CruPerdu DOCG NV 1.5L

    WD92

    About Castello Bonomi

The Paladin family, who has been making estate-bottled wine for about 60 years, owns several estates across Italy, from the Veneto to Tuscany, but... perhaps their most famous and most distinct is Castello Bonomi, in Lombardy’s Franciacorta region. With vinicultural history that dates back to medieval Benedictine monks, Franciacorta spans about 5,400 acres, but this rare northern Italian region is devoted to one unique style of wine: the best champagne-styled sparklers that you can find outside of France — indeed, it’s the sole DOCG region that permits classic méthode champenoise sparklers. The family-owned-and-operated Castello Bonomi estate is housed in a gorgeous art deco villa built in the late nineteenth century, and the estate’s vineyards sit on 60 steeply pitched acres in a natural amphitheater that rests at the foot of Mount Orfano. These terraced vineyards enjoy a privileged microclimate that includes limestone-rich soils, southern exposures, excellent drainage, and pure sunlight. These elements provide the raw materials that Castello Bonomi’s Chardonnay and Pinot Nero grapes need, while a strict green harvest, low yields, and stringent grape sorting help the estate’s team craft a range of terroir-driven, award-winning Franciacorta wines.

    Tenuta Marino Di Monterado

Tenuta Marino Viaggio IGT Marche Rosso 2018 1.5L

    WD91
About Tenuta Marino: Capitalizing upon Chris Marino’s experience working in Michelin-starred restaurants and Marjorie Marino’s international background in marketing and management, the couple... recognized a rare opportunity to forge the life they wanted in Le Marche, finding the property that would become their Tenuta Marino in 2017. Located a short drive from the Adriatic resort town of Senigallia, Tenuta Marino is new to the world, but what this estate lacks in history, it more than makes up for in microclimate and natural beauty. Just fifteen organically tended acres, the Marino estate holds multiple olive groves and 8 acres of vineyards planted to indigenous grapes Sangiovese and Montepulciano, as well as both red and white international varietals. The estate’s debut wine is its crisp mono-varietal 2018 Sangiovese Rosé, but Marino has since released three reds and will soon release its two Metodo Classico sparklers as well. Poised to make the most out of its sea-swept, sunny hillside vineyards, Tenuta Marino has a bright future for its winemakers — and for lovers of Italian wine.

    Montevertine

Montevertine Rosso Toscana IGT 2019 750ml

    About Montevertine

Just under 50 acres located in and around the rolling hills of Radda in the Chianti Classico region, Montevertine has made a powerful impact on the global... wine landscape with its cult mono-varietal bottling, Le Pergole Torte, but even more than that glowing achievement, Montevertine has exerted a kind of gravitational pull over the entire Chianti region because of its staunch adherence to traditional indigenous grapes, especially Sangiovese. Founder Sergio Manetti wasn’t looking to shift the Tuscan winemaking landscape when he bought the lands that would become Montevertine in 1967, but he planted about five acres of Sangiovese, made some wine for friends, and sent a couple of bottles off to Vinitaly as a lark. The wine was a hit, and Montevertine was born. Today, Montevertine, helmed by Sergio’s son, Martino, spans nine organically tended vineyard parcels, with the majority planted to Sangiovese, and it crafts three wines. Montevertine’s position has shifted from new guard to vanguard, and wine-lovers around the globe await every new release with bated breath.

Fontodi Vinsanto del Chianti Classico 2012 375ml

    WD94

Fontodi Vin Santo del Chianti Classico 2012 375ml

Rich, opulent, and wonderfully complex, this organic Vin Santo from Fontodi offers terrific complexity, profound aromatics,... and a decadent drinking experience. Layers of dried figs, apricots, and raisins are dusted with cocoa powder and baking spices, drizzled with salted caramel, and shot through with orange zest and marmalade in this important Vin Santo. A blend of Malvasia and Sangiovese, Fontodi’s Vin Santo gives a nice balance among its elements — silky tannins, fresh acidity, juicy fruits, salty minerals, and lingering sweetness.

    Bartolo Mascarello Barolo 2019 750ml

    AVG95

    About Bartolo Mascarello

Bartolo Mascarello was an intractable defender of traditional Barolo, the “last of the Mohicans,” in his words. Bartolo made Barolos that... gorgeously embodied their vintage and their terroir, and these supple, powerful, and nuanced wines have captivated their fans for generations. Since Bartolo’s passing in 2005, his daughter Maria Teresa Mascarello has helmed the cantina at 15 Via Roma, the legendary site of the Bartolo Mascarello estate since its founding in 1918, and under her leadership, Mascarello’s Barolo, Dolcetto, and Barbera have grown even finer, subtler, more detailed, and spellbinding. While the Mascarello estate sports enviable holdings in Cannubi, San Lorenzo and Rué, located in the commune of Barolo, as well as in La Morra’s Rocche in the commune of La Morra, it still has never released a cru wine. Blending, Bartolo believed, provided balance, especially in challenging vintages. Maria Teresa sees no reason to change her father’s ways (or those of his father, and his before him). After all, there’s no improving upon perfection.

    Poderi Aldo Conterno

Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Granbussia 2006 1.5L

    About Poderi Aldo Conterno

Poderi Aldo Conterno rose to fame by crafting some of the best-known, best-loved cru Barolo expressions in its Barolo Romirasco, Colonnello, and... Cicala, as well as its Chardonnay Bussiador and its Quartetto, a red wine that blends Nebbiolo with international grapes. In 1969, Aldo Conterno famously parted ways with his brother at their father’s estate, Giacomo Conterno, and founded Poderi Aldo Conterno in the “Favot” cellar on 61 acres in Bussia of Monforte d'Alba, the heart of Barolo country. Aldo’s vision was to craft wines that blended traditional structure, grace, and longevity with exquisitely transparent terroir, seductive juiciness, and a clearly defined personality. Before his death in 2012, Aldo achieved all this and more, creating a winemaking legacy that set him apart as one of the world’s greatest winemakers. The Aldo Conterno estate continues Aldo’s remarkable winemaking work in the hands of his three sons, Franco, Stefano, and Giacomo.
