Known for being a modernist, Rocche dei Manzoni has long roots in Barolo’s subregion of Monforte d’Alba — the estate began in the eighteenth century, which makes it one of the region’s oldest. Rocche dei Manzoni’s modern era began in 1974 when Valentino Migliorini and his wife, Jolanda, purchased the estate. An outsider from Emilia-Romagna, Valentino worked hard to craft wines that fit his vision, which did not conform to traditional Piemontese standards. He was the first to plant Chardonnay in the Langhe; he pioneered aging Nebbiolo in barriques; he championed cru Barolo production; and he produced some of the Langhe’s premiere blends, including the Super-Piemontese Bricco Manzoni. Valentino passed away in 2007, but he left a legacy of winemaking that stretches far beyond his lifetime–or even his 125 acres of vines, and today, Rodolfo Migliorini, Valentino’s son, helms this beloved estate. While Rocche dei Manzoni Barolos are regarded as modern, their elegance and purity of expression match their intensity and oakiness; indeed, these wines are cult faves the world over.
