The hills around Radda in Chianti Classico have been home to wine for centuries, but few of today’s estates can boast a thousand years of history. Premiata Fattoria Castelvecchi can. At the center of the estate’s 60 acres sits the castle that lends Castelvecchi its name, and this castle sports foundations that date back to the ninth and tenth centuries. But it’s not merely the foundations that are historical — documents suggest that Castelvecchi’s lands have been home to vines since at least 1043! History imbues everything that Castelvecchi’s team does. Helmed by Carlo, Lucia, and Roberto Paladin, the Castelvecchi team trusts nature in making its wine, taking minimal interventions with the estate’s vines, some of which are more than 50 years old, and working to maintain a strong sense of terroir in the estate’s three Chianti Classico wines and single Super-Tuscan bottling. Radda’s vineyards are prized for their high altitudes and marly sandstone soils, and Castelvecchi works to bring Radda’s terroir to their wines.
