Lipari, the largest of the Aeolian Islands that form a chain stretching between Campania’s Vesuvius and Siclia’s Etna, spans only 14.5 square miles, but it boasts millennia of viticultural history. Entrepreneurs-turned-winemakers, Massimo Lentsch and Stefania Frattolillo loved Lipari, and they saw potential in the island’s windswept, sun-drenched climate, its volcanic soils, and its thousands of years of winemaking traditions. In 2005, they and their agricultural team began renovating plots of land and securing ancient indigenous vine clippings from across the Aeolian Islands, and in 2006, Tenuta di Castellaro was born. Aided by agronomist Alessandro Zanutta and consulting winemaker Emiliano Falsini, the Tenuta di Castellaro use organic methods to grow its grapevines, which are trained in the traditional head-trained system of cultivation, and the team crafts its spellbinding, pure wines in its underground cantina, built to include autochthonous columns of rock and designed to have zero environmental and energy impact. The resulting wines are elegant, passionate interpretations of Lipari’s rich vinicultural history.
