Tormaresca Calafuria Negroamaro Rosato Salento IGT 2022

Deriving from vineyards that cling to the Adriatic coastline, Tormaresca’s Calafuria Rosato uses indigenous Negroamaro to create a wine that matches wildness with sophistication. This spicy, juicy 2022 rosato shows the sunny, mineral-laden side of Puglia’s best-loved red grape in a palate of citrus, stone fruits, sea spray, and white flower petals, with lots of savory elements to balance out the wine’s tasty lushness. [Will Di Nunzio, 02/09/2024]

    Description

    About Marchesi Antinori Tormaresca

When purchasing Tormaresca, the Antinori family’s Puglia estate, in 1998, the took a two-prong approach: the 247-acre Tenuta Bocca di Lupo sits in Castel del Monte in the wild beauty of Murgia, and the 1,235-acre satellite called Masseria Maime in Salento, close to the Adriatic sea. Growing both indigenous and international grape varietals, Tormaresca draws from these two locations to create wines that offer a panoramic view of Puglia, while offering a finessed style that bridges traditional Italian and more modern wine profiles. As with most of Antinori’s estates, Tormaresca rests in the capable hands of CEO, enologist, and winemaker Renzo Cotarella and his team, who work to craft wines that transmit the region’s unusual volcanic terroir. Bocca di Lupo, the flagship Aglianico wine from Tormaresca’s Murgia site, may be the most famous of the estate’s releases, but Tormaresca also makes an entry-level red, Trentantelli, as well as Pietrabianca, a white, and Kaloro, a mineral-laden rosato; each wine represents a different facet of Puglia, one of Italy’s great undiscovered gems.

    About Mamete Prevostini

Fewer than 50 acres in the pristine Valtellina subregion, located in northern Italy’s Lombardia, Mamete Prevostini is something of a cult superstar... in the making. The Prevostini family has been living in Valtellina’s craggy Alpine hills for generations; indeed, this family-owned-and-operated estate saw its start in the 1920s, when Mamete started making his own wine to accompany the fine food he served in his restaurant. In addition to its award-winning Chiavennasca bottlings, Prevostini also crafts a range of whites and rosés, which derive from lower altitude vineyards. Prevostini grows its grapes sustainably, and it vinifies its wines in its state-of-the-art carbon-neutral cantina, aging them in natural crotti, of caves, which dot the region. Winemaker-owner Mamete Prevostini, grandson of the founder, sees his natural — and naturally delicious — winemaking as a commitment to nature and to tradition. Remarkable expressions of their Dolomite terroir, Prevostini’s wines evoke the clear mountain air, sparkling sunshine, and rare alpine microclimates.

    Castello Bonomi

Castello Bonomi Franciacorta Brut CruPerdu DOCG NV 1.5L

    WD92

    About Castello Bonomi

The Paladin family, who has been making estate-bottled wine for about 60 years, owns several estates across Italy, from the Veneto to Tuscany, but... perhaps their most famous and most distinct is Castello Bonomi, in Lombardy’s Franciacorta region. With vinicultural history that dates back to medieval Benedictine monks, Franciacorta spans about 5,400 acres, but this rare northern Italian region is devoted to one unique style of wine: the best champagne-styled sparklers that you can find outside of France — indeed, it’s the sole DOCG region that permits classic méthode champenoise sparklers. The family-owned-and-operated Castello Bonomi estate is housed in a gorgeous art deco villa built in the late nineteenth century, and the estate’s vineyards sit on 60 steeply pitched acres in a natural amphitheater that rests at the foot of Mount Orfano. These terraced vineyards enjoy a privileged microclimate that includes limestone-rich soils, southern exposures, excellent drainage, and pure sunlight. These elements provide the raw materials that Castello Bonomi’s Chardonnay and Pinot Nero grapes need, while a strict green harvest, low yields, and stringent grape sorting help the estate’s team craft a range of terroir-driven, award-winning Franciacorta wines.

    Tenuta Marino Di Monterado

Tenuta Marino Viaggio IGT Marche Rosso 2018 1.5L

    WD91
About Tenuta Marino: Capitalizing upon Chris Marino’s experience working in Michelin-starred restaurants and Marjorie Marino’s international background in marketing and management, the couple... recognized a rare opportunity to forge the life they wanted in Le Marche, finding the property that would become their Tenuta Marino in 2017. Located a short drive from the Adriatic resort town of Senigallia, Tenuta Marino is new to the world, but what this estate lacks in history, it more than makes up for in microclimate and natural beauty. Just fifteen organically tended acres, the Marino estate holds multiple olive groves and 8 acres of vineyards planted to indigenous grapes Sangiovese and Montepulciano, as well as both red and white international varietals. The estate’s debut wine is its crisp mono-varietal 2018 Sangiovese Rosé, but Marino has since released three reds and will soon release its two Metodo Classico sparklers as well. Poised to make the most out of its sea-swept, sunny hillside vineyards, Tenuta Marino has a bright future for its winemakers — and for lovers of Italian wine.

    Bartolo Mascarello

    Bartolo Mascarello Barolo 2014 750ml

    About Bartolo Mascarello

Bartolo Mascarello was an intractable defender of traditional Barolo, the “last of the Mohicans,” in his words. Bartolo made Barolos that... gorgeously embodied their vintage and their terroir, and these supple, powerful, and nuanced wines have captivated their fans for generations. Since Bartolo’s passing in 2005, his daughter Maria Teresa Mascarello has helmed the cantina at 15 Via Roma, the legendary site of the Bartolo Mascarello estate since its founding in 1918, and under her leadership, Mascarello’s Barolo, Dolcetto, and Barbera have grown even finer, subtler, more detailed, and spellbinding. While the Mascarello estate sports enviable holdings in Cannubi, San Lorenzo and Rué, located in the commune of Barolo, as well as in La Morra’s Rocche in the commune of La Morra, it still has never released a cru wine. Blending, Bartolo believed, provided balance, especially in challenging vintages. Maria Teresa sees no reason to change her father’s ways (or those of his father, and his before him). After all, there’s no improving upon perfection.
