When purchasing Tormaresca, the Antinori family’s Puglia estate, in 1998, the took a two-prong approach: the 247-acre Tenuta Bocca di Lupo... sits in Castel del Monte in the wild beauty of Murgia, and the 1,235-acre satellite called Masseria Maime in Salento, close to the Adriatic sea. Growing both indigenous and international grape varietals, Tormaresca draws from these two locations to create wines that offer a panoramic view of Puglia, while offering a finessed style that bridges traditional Italian and more modern wine profiles. As with most of Antinori's estates, Tormaresca rests in the capable hands of CEO, enologist, and winemaker Renzo Cotarella and his team, who work to craft wines that transmit the region's unusual volcanic terroir. The stone fortress that serves as the namesake for Castello della Sala was built in 1350, but the modern age for this estate began in... 1940, when Marchese Niccolò Antinori purchased the 1,200-acre estate (495 acres planted to vine). In the late 1970s, Piero Antinori, son of Niccolò, felt inspired to create an age-worthy, complex white wine, so he joined forces with Umbrian native Renzo Cotarella, who had recently joined the Castello della Sala team. After years of tinkering, experimenting, and eureka moments, the estate’s flagship white, Cervaro della Sala was born, which saw its debut with the 1985 vintage, and a new Italian wine icon was born. But Castello della Sala isn’t limited to high quality whites; the estate’s vineyards sport fossil-rich calcareous-clay soils that, while ideal for white grape varietals, also makes for spectacular Pinot Noir. One of the original members of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino, Baricci is also one of the best small Brunello producers. Nello Baricci passed the... estate to his son-in-law, Pietro Buffi, who recently gave the reins to his son, Federico. The Buffi family makes wines that are true to type, honest and real. Baricci uses non-interventionist practices in farming its Galestro Schist-based 29-acre (12 under vine) vineyards that sit at about 850 feet above sea level, and it uses traditional methods in the cantina too: fermenting in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks, and aging in medium-sized oak botti. Traditional and family-owned-and-operated, Baricci's output every vintage is tantalizingly small, although in recent years Baricci has added a riserva bottling to its lineup and built a new cellar facility to help increase both the quality and quantity of its fine wines. With a yearly production of just 2,500 cases, Baricci's wines are hard to find, but their complex, delicious palates make them easy to enjoy, and definitely a bang for your Brunello buck!
