Incisa della Rocchetta – Mario – is the man responsible for the creation of the very first Super Tuscan: Sassicaia. After its first release in 1968 many producers followed suit in the ‘70s and ‘80s, now there are scores of wine makers daring to make these blends all over the country. Sassicaia didn’t just happen overnight of course, it took the better part of twenty years to perfect this blend and put it to market. Just like the family does with Sassciaia in Tuscany, they use the same principles and their drive for quality in their Piedmont estate.

Formally founded in 1937 in Maggiore, located at the foot of Piedmont’s Monte Rosa, the Antonio Vallana e Figlio estate has been quietly... undergoing a wonderful renaissance. The Vallana estate made its reputation on crafting the finest Nebbiolo wines in Alto Piemonte, a region that sits in a strip several miles north of Torino. In this region, Nebbiolo is known as Spanna, and the land’s elevation, acidic soils, and terrific temperature swings bring out Nebbiolo’s savory, delicate, vibrant side. Today’s Vallana estate is helmed by Francis Vallana, the grandson of founder Bernard, who is aided by his mother Giuseppina and his sisters Marina and Miriam. The estate practices organic viniculture on its steep, terraced vineyards and super-traditional viticulture in its cantina. Using ancient concrete vessels to vinify their wines and giant neutral botti to age them assures Frances and his team that Vallana’s terroir shines in every bottle. Over the past decade, Vallana has been impressing critics and amassing fans with their unique, ethereal wines that get better and better every year.

Founded in 1921 by brothers Giuseppe and Giovanni Pelissero, the tiny family-owned-and-operated Pasquale Pelissero estate entered its modern era in... the 1970s when its namesake, Pasquale, began bottling his estate-grown wines. Pasquale, or Papa, was a pioneer in Barbaresco because, at that time, few other estates were bottling their own Barbaresco. Pasquale’s daughter, Ornella, started working in the vineyards when she was just 15, and she assumed control of Pasquale Pelissero in 2007 when her father suddenly passed away. Just under 20 acres in the hills around Neive, Pasquale Pelissero grows sustainably and adheres to tradition — indeed, Ornella’s only concession to modern technology is a temperature-controlled fermentation tank. Ornella and her son, Simone, do everything at Pasquale Pelissero, from maintaining the vines to vinifying their wines in their cellar that sits near the top of the Bricco San Giuliano hill. Pasquale Pelissero crafts fewer than 4,000 cases of its tradition, terroir-driven wine a year.

Giacinto Brovia took control of the estate begun by his grandfather in 1953, and since then, this 47-acre estate has worked to preserve a sense of terroir and to honor tradition in their wines. These days, Giacinto’s granddaughters, Cristina and Elena, run the estate with Elena’s husband, Alex; along with their team, they rely upon the knowledge passed down by their family, as well as their formal enological training, in making Brovia’s various traditional Piemontese wines.

Beppe Colla assumed control of the estate in 1956 and expanded Prunotto’s success with a savvy strategy of researching the finest vineyard sites, purchasing the best grapes, and experimenting with cru bottlings. The Antinori family started distributing Prunotto’s wine in 1989 and assumed control of the estate in 1994. In a project spearheaded by Albiera Antinori, Prunotto recreated itself with an eye to wines defined by very specific terroir. Albiera began researching and purchasing specific vineyards, eventually amassing 161 acres that spread across the Langhe and Monferrato, with holdings in the legendary Barolo vineyards of Vigna Colonnello, Bussia, Bric Turot, as well as Barbera’s Pian Romualdo, Barbaresco’s Secondine, and many more. Under Albiera’s careful stewardship, Prunotto has not merely regained its former glory — it has surpassed it, cementing this venerable winemaker as one of the very best that Piemonte has to offer.

About Michele Chiarlo
Michele Chiarlo bottled his first Barolo vintage in 1958. Back then, Michele was a recent graduate of the Oenology School of Alba, and he owned no... vineyards. Michele soon realized that stringent grape quality control was the secret to making great wines, so he began leasing vineyards to ensure high quality grapes. Michele then turned his attention to purchasing the best available vineyard holdings, and he acquired plots in Barolo’s Cannubi and Cerequio, as well as Asti, where some of the finest Barbera plots later were reclassified as part of the Nizza DOCG. Today, the Michele Chiarlo estate spans more than 270 acres across Langhe, Monferrato, and Gavi, and it includes a boutique hotel in Cerequio. Michele passed away in 2023, and this family-owned estate is now run by Michele’s sons, Alberto and Stefano, who continue their father’s single-minded pursuit of growing Piemonte’s finest indigenous grapes and making wines that are as honest as they are delicious.
