About Pasquale Pelissero

Founded in 1921 by brothers Giuseppe and Giovanni Pelissero, the tiny family-owned-and-operated Pasquale Pelissero estate entered its modern era in... the 1970s when its namesake, Pasquale, began bottling his estate-grown wines. Pasquale, or Papa, was a pioneer in Barbaresco because, at that time, few other estates were bottling their own Barbaresco. Pasquale’s daughter, Ornella, started working in the vineyards when she was just 15, and she assumed control of Pasquale Pelissero in 2007 when her father suddenly passed away. Just under 20 acres in the hills around Neive, Pasquale Pelissero grows sustainably and adheres to tradition — indeed, Ornella’s only concession to modern technology is a temperature-controlled fermentation tank. Ornella and her son, Simone, do everything at Pasquale Pelissero, from maintaining the vines to vinifying their wines in their cellar that sits near the top of the Bricco San Giuliano hill. Pasquale Pelissero crafts fewer than 4,000 cases of its tradition, terroir-driven wine a year.

Ada Nada

About Ada Nada

The Ada Nada estate, which sits in the Rombone subregion of Barbaresco, dates to 1919 when Carlo Nada planted his first 7.5 acres of vines. More than a century... later, the family-owned-and-operated estate is still going strong, run by Annalisa and Elvio, the great-granddaughter of founder Carlo and her ex-rugby player husband. Ada Nada has grown to just over 22 acres in Treiso, and the estate has been certified organic for more than a decade. Annalisa and Elvo, who run the winery with help from their children, love its intimate size, which grows enough wine to support the family but doesn’t demand more energy than they have to give. Ada Nada is a true “in-the-know” Barbaresco estate, and its hard-to-find, limited-production wines are high quality but they don’t strain the wallet. Ada Nada’s winemaking protocol relies on a thoughtful mix of traditional with some more modern methods, and the winery crafts pure, authentic single-vineyard Barbaresco expressions, among other typical Langhe wines.

Gaja

Gaja Sito Moresco Rosso Langhe 2019 1.5L

About Gaja Sito Moresco

Rockstar winemaker Angelo Gaja has always known terrific terroir when he saw it. In 1979, Angelo had a chance to buy a 25-acre vineyard located in... Pajorè, one of Trieso’s prime Barbaresco sites, from Giovannini Moresco, whose small estate released some of Barbaresco’s most finely made, low production wines. While the Moresco estate is no longer a standalone entity, the Gaja team will occasionally bottle the Pajorè grapes separately as a cru wine; however, the grapes most commonly appear in the estate’s cuvee Barbaresco, or in Sito Moresco, a rare Super-Piemontese blend. Named for the plot’s original owner, Sito Moresco is an unusual blend of Nebbiolo with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and sometimes Barbera; this unique mix of traditional Italian and international grapes gives Gaja fans a delicious, uncommon drinking experience that also delivers quality far beyond its modest price point.

Gaja

Gaja Gaia & Rey Langhe Chardonnay 2021 750ml

About Gaja

You can’t overestimate the impact of Angelo Gaja on the global fine wine landscape. Though the Gaja estate was founded in 1859 by Angelo’s great-grandfather,... Angelo started shaking things up in 1961 when he assumed control of the family’s winery. Angelo started small: choosing to bottle only estate-grown wines, reducing crop sizes, and decreasing fermentation periods. By 1967, Angelo had gained the confidence to make larger changes, beginning with the bottling of cru Barbaresco Sorì San Lorenzo, while Sorì Tildìn followed in 1970 and Costa Russi in 1978. In the mid-1970s, Angelo began aging his wines in barriques, and he replaced some prime Nebbiolo vines in Barbaresco with Cabernet Sauvignon for his Darmagi and Chardonnay for his Gaia & Rey. But as radical as some of Angelo’s innovations seemed — and his adding some Barbera to his cru Barbaresco and Barolo appeared very radical —Angelo’s boldest moves helped to bring his wines, as well as Piemonte wines, to the notice of the international market. Angelo refused to play by any rules but his own; he refused to compromise on the quality of his wines; and he succeeded. Angelo began his transition to retirement in 2004, and winemaking duties now rest in the hands of his daughter, Gaia, who has been making bold moves of her own, all in the single-minded pursuit of crafting wines of outstanding excellence.
