Azienda Agricola La Torre Rosso di Montalcino 2021 750ml

About Azienda Agricola La Torre

"La Torre" translates to "the tower," and this exciting Montalcino estate spreads across almost 90 acres in Sesti, near Sant’Angelo in Colle,... though fewer than 14 acres are under vine. Owner-winemaker Luigi Anania purchased this estate in 1976, and the winery saw its inaugural Brunello vintage in 1982, one of the truly fabled years of the last century. Anania and his team use non-interventionist practices in the vineyard and traditional winemaking in the cellar to craft La Torre’s terroir-driven, accessible wines. The most remarkable aspect of La Torre is the elevation of its vineyards. Perched at about 1,500 feet above sea level in the southwestern Brunello subzone, these naturally terraced, limestone-rich vineyards are high enough to enjoy gentle breezes coming off the Tyrrhenian Sea, which helps La Torre’s Sangiovese Grosso grapes ripen fully, while escaping heat and dryness. La Torre’s delicious, enjoyable, and traditional Brunello wines are true gems, especially at their relatively affordable price point.

Baricci Colombaio di Montosoli Rosso di Montalcino 2022 750ml

About Baricci

One of the original members of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino, Baricci is also one of the best small Brunello producers. Nello Baricci passed the... estate to his son-in-law, Pietro Buffi, who recently gave the reins to his son, Federico. The Buffi family makes wines that are true to type, honest and real. Baricci uses non-interventionist practices in farming its Galestro Schist-based 29-acre (12 under vine) vineyards that sit at about 850 feet above sea level, and it uses traditional methods in the cantina too: fermenting in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks, and aging in medium-sized oak botti. Traditional and family-owned-and-operated, Baricci's output every vintage is tantalizingly small, although in recent years Baricci has added a riserva bottling to its lineup and built a new cellar facility to help increase both the quality and quantity of its fine wines. With a yearly production of just 2,500 cases, Baricci's wines are hard to find, but their complex, delicious palates make them easy to enjoy, and definitely a bang for your Brunello buck!

Cupano Rosso di Montalcino 2019 750ml

About Cupano

In 1994, Ornella Tondini and Lionel Cousin purchased an abandoned farm near Camigliano, in the Brunello region; cows roamed the fields that would soon be planted... to Sangiovese Grosso (and, later, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon). Resting on a lonely plain, Cupano occupies a beautiful, windswept spot, and it was exactly what Ornella and Lionello had wanted for their estate. Lionel, who died in 2021, had studied with renowned vigneron Henri Jayer, and he began planting vines in the estate’s virgin soils in 1997, discovering that the land once held ancient seabed and finding bits of a fossilized whale skeleton remains of ancient seashells in the rocky soils, all components that lend a piquant minerality to the wine. Cupano’s inaugural vintage was in 2000, and since that time, the estate has grown to 84 acres and achieved international acclaim. Cupano continues under the guidance of Ornella, her daughter Andrea Polidoro, and Cupano’s longtime estate manager. Cupano’s single-minded pursuit to craft natural, finessed, and aromatic wines vintage after vintage, and Cupano’s elegant Brunello, Brunello Riserva, Rosso di Montalcino, and Ombrone are beloved by global wine lovers.

Canalicchio di Sopra

Canalicchio di Sopra Rosso di Montalcino 2019 1.5L

About Canalicchio di Sopra

One of Brunello’s old guard, Canalicchio di Sopra was founded on land acquired by a former sharecropper, and Primo Pacenti, who started... Canalicchio in 1962, was one of the people who made Brunello the wine it is. Primo handed Canalicchio di Sopra to his son-in-law, Pier Luigi Ripacciolo, and since 2001, the estate has been run by Pier Luigi’s son, Francesco, who has raised Canalicchio’s game to outstanding heights. With two vineyard parcels that sit north and east of the town of Montalcino, sheltered by Mount Amiata and kissed by sea breezes blowing off the Mediterranean, Canalicchio di Sopra’s 47 acres occupy some the highest altitudes in the Brunello region and possess sterling microclimates that protect their vines from too much heat, snow, or rain, as well as aberrant weather like hail. “Elegance” is the watchword at Canalicchio di Sopra, and this maker delivers, whether the estate’s the cru Brunello La Casaccia, a bottling that debuted with the 2015 vintage; its normale Brunello; its Brunello Riserva; or its Rosso di Montalcino.
