About Colle Santa Mustiola
Sometimes a winemaker begins with a singular vision, and that’s the case with Fabio Cenni, who got his start as a marketer for his father’s wine... distribution business in the 1970s. When Fabio took the reins of his grandfather’s Tuscan winery in the 1980s, he decided to dedicate himself to the study, cultivation, and vinification of one grape: Sangiovese. Fabio’s single-minded pursuit led him to isolate specific Sangiovese clones and replant his family’s vineyard with 28 specific Sangiovese clones — four that date from before the phylloxera outbreaks of the late 19th and early 20th centuries — and create some of the best, most authentic, longest-lived, and absolutely gorgeous Sangiovese wines on the planet. Located in Chiusi, an ancient site for winegrowers, Colle Santa Mustiola spans about 12 pebble-strewn sandy acres of organically tended Sangiovese vines, and the cantina is housed in a site that opens from ancient Etruscan tomb; this underground cave offers perfect temperature control for Mustiola’s wines. Fabio still helms Colle Santa Mustiola, aided by longtime enologist Emiliano Falsini, and the estate quietly crafts achingly pure Sangiovese wines that are age-worthy, complex, and very hard to find.
