About Pasquale Pelissero

Founded in 1921 by brothers Giuseppe and Giovanni Pelissero, the tiny family-owned-and-operated Pasquale Pelissero estate entered its modern era in... the 1970s when its namesake, Pasquale, began bottling his estate-grown wines. Pasquale, or Papa, was a pioneer in Barbaresco because, at that time, few other estates were bottling their own Barbaresco. Pasquale’s daughter, Ornella, started working in the vineyards when she was just 15, and she assumed control of Pasquale Pelissero in 2007 when her father suddenly passed away. Just under 20 acres in the hills around Neive, Pasquale Pelissero grows sustainably and adheres to tradition — indeed, Ornella’s only concession to modern technology is a temperature-controlled fermentation tank. Ornella and her son, Simone, do everything at Pasquale Pelissero, from maintaining the vines to vinifying their wines in their cellar that sits near the top of the Bricco San Giuliano hill. Pasquale Pelissero crafts fewer than 4,000 cases of its tradition, terroir-driven wine a year.

Marchese Antinori Castello della Sala

The stone fortress that serves as the namesake for Castello della Sala was built in 1350, but the modern age for this estate began in... 1940, when Marchese Niccolò Antinori purchased the 1,200-acre estate (495 acres planted to vine). In the late 1970s, Piero Antinori, son of Niccolò, felt inspired to create an age-worthy, complex white wine, so he joined forces with Umbrian native Renzo Cotarella, who had recently joined the Castello della Sala team. After years of tinkering, experimenting, and eureka moments, the estate’s flagship white, Cervaro della Sala was born, which saw its debut with the 1985 vintage, and a new Italian wine icon was born. But Castello della Sala isn’t limited to high quality whites; the estate’s vineyards sport fossil-rich calcareous-clay soils that, while ideal for white grape varietals, also makes for spectacular Pinot Noir. Today’s Castello della Sala crafts a range of wines that include multiple whites and reds, as well as Muffato della Sala, a showstopping dessert wine.

Cerbaia

Cerbaia Brunello di Montalcino 2019 750ml

Azienda Agricola Cerbaia

Located above the fog line high on the Montosoli hill just north of Montalcino, Cerbaia is neither very large nor very old. This organic 29-acre... estate (fewer than 11 acres under vine) was founded in 1978, but despite its relative youth and diminutive size, Cerbaia is one of Brunello’s rising stars and definitely an estate to watch! Agronomist Fabio Pellegrini chose Montosoli for his estate because he saw tremendous potential in the subregion’s galestro soil because this clayey, rocky dirt was ideal for the cultivation of small-berried, thick-skinned Brunello grapes. Fabio ran Cerbaia until 2014, which his daughter, Elena, assumed control. In trading her career in finance for that of a winemaker, Elena was making a big life change, but her gamble is paying off. Cerbaia may average only 1,500 cases of Brunello every vintage, but eyes are on Cerbaia’s wines. Traditional, aromatic, long-aging, and terroir-driven, Cerbaia’s Brunello releases have everything to please the wine’s many, many fans!

About Marchesi Antinori Tormaresca / Tenuta Bocca dio Lupo

This certified organic 247-acre sits in the center of Castel del Monte, surrounded by the wild, sparse beauty of Murgia. Bocca di Lupo grows primarily indigenous grapes, though you’ll also find some international grape varietals for the estate’s rosé wine. Bocca di Lupo is under the guidance of CEO, enologist, and winemaker Renzo Cotarella and his team, who work to craft wines that transmit the region's unusual volcanic terroir. The Antinori family sees Bocca di Lupo, which literally translates to the “mouth of the wolf” and figuratively means “good luck,” as a vital part of their effort to raise the profile of Puglian wine.

Tenuta Fanti

Fanti Brunello di Montalcino 2019 750ml

About Tenuta Fanti

While the Fanti estate sprawls across 740 acres in Castelnuovo dell'Abata, which sits southeast of the town of Montalcino, it’s very much a family... enterprise. The Fanti family has lived on and made wine from these lands for more than 200 years, working as sharecroppers before current winemaker-owner Filippo Fanti assumed control of the family’s lands in the 1970s. Just over 120 acres of Fanti’s property is devoted to vine-growing (about 60 acres also grows olive trees), and the Fanti family relies on organic agriculture to tend to its vines. Filippo is very much a hands-on winemaker, and he designed the cellar to reflect a combination of tradition and innovation, selected his aging casks with an eye to quality, and chosen to use lightweight glass bottles to reduce the carbon footprint of the estate’s wines. Today, Filippo’s daughter Elisa works alongside her father, and together with their team, the Fanti estate crafts deeply authentic, terroir-driven wines that reflect the family’s philosophy of putting nature first.

Podere Le Boncie

Podere Le Boncie Le Trame Rosso di Toscana IGT 2019 750ml

WD95

About Podere Le Boncie

Podere Le Boncie might be the very definition of a boutique winery. This organic estate is tiny, a little less than ten acres situated in the hills near... San Felice in the southern part of the Chianti Classico zone. It’s wholly organic, planted to obscure clones of indigenous Tuscan grapes. Helmed by owner-winemaker Giovanna Morganti, a woman dedicated to crafting miniscule quantities of her otherworldly Tuscan wines, Le Boncie makes only three wines: Le Trame, or “the intrigues”; and Cinque, for the five grape varietals the estate grows; and Chiesamonti, a cru wine from a vineyard of the same name. When Giovanna’s grandfather gave her a small farm of olive groves in the 1980s, she chose to put her enologist training to use. Giovanna chose to plant her traditional Tuscan grapes super densely, ensuring that the yields would be naturally low, and she chose to rely on organic and biodynamic methods so that her wines would be pure, unmediated expressions of her unique terroir. Giovanna even ferments her wine in open-topped vats because she wants to honor the age-old Tuscan winemaking traditions. The resulting wines have amassed a cult following, and Giovanna sits among Italy’s finest makers of natural wines.

Le Ragnaie

Le Ragnaie Brunello di Montalcino 2019 750ml

WD95

About Le Ragnaie

Le Ragnaie spans almost 70 acres (about 38 planted to vine) that teem with wildlife, birds, and natural beauty. Riccardo and Jennifer Campinoti purchased Le... Ragnaie in 2002, and since that time, the estate has been on an upward trajectory. Le Ragnaie gets its name from “ragnatela,” the Italian word for spiderweb and the shape of traditional bird-catching nets, a nod to the desperate poverty that Montalcino experienced prior to its wine renaissance, when locals relied on catching birds for food. Fortunes changed, however, as Brunello found a following. Le Ragnaie has three vineyard parcels: Le Ragnaie in the central zone; Petroso, located just below the village of Montalcino; and Castelnuovo dell’Abate, located in the South of Montalcino in the foothills of Mount Amiata. Many of Le Ragnaie’s acres once rested above the elevation that DOCG allowed for Brunello, but in 2016, Italian wine’s ruling body raised elevation limits, so Le Ragnaie can now use its high elevation vineyards to craft its high-toned, finessed, and deeply elegant wines. The Le Ragnaie team is deeply committed to preserving the natural beauty of Montalcino and grows its grapes organically and biodynamically, while using very traditional vinification techniques in making its superb Brunello bottlings.
