About Cantina del Taburno

Cantina del Taburno is located in Campania, on the slopes of Monte Taburno which overlooks the town of Benevento just 15 miles away. This area is all... about the wonderful indigenous grapes of Campania like Falanghina, Fiano, Aglianico and Piedirosso. The rich soils, the incredibly balanced weather this region enjoys regularly and, of course, the particular microclimate the slopes and nearby mountains create make for some incredibly delicious wines. The winery at Cantina del Taburno was founded in 1972, but the vineyards had long been a part of what was called the “Consorzio Agrario di Benevento” (Agrarian Consortium of Benevento) which was established in 1901. At the time, these Consortiums were vital for the survival of Italian grape growers as the most of them were too poor to grow grapes, make and bottle wine AND do sales. It was a group effort that was common in all of Italy and ensured all could benefit. While most producers in northern and central Italy managed to become independent quickly, the south has been making their mark only now in the last 15-20 years and they are coming up strong. Today the estate boasts 600 hectares of land and covers all corners of the Sannio wine making region around Benevento.

About Villa S.Anna

Located in the village of Abbadia di Montepulciano the hills of southern Tuscany, Villa S. Anna (originally spelled Villa Sant’Anna) stands as a standard... bearer of traditional Vino di Montepulciano. Villa S.Anna is owned and operated by three women: matriarch Simona Ruggeri Fabroni and her two daughters, Anna and Margherita. Simona’s family had owned the land that’s now Villa S.Anna for centuries, quietly making some wine for personal consumption and selling off the rest of the grapes to other producers. In 1989, Simona decided to begin estate-bottling her wines, and Villa S.Anna was born. Over the past three decades, Simona and her daughters have increased their vineyard holdings to about 25 acres, mostly in the two regions of Chianti Colli Senesi and Vino Nobili Montepulciano, and today this small estate crafts four wines, each one representative of its Tuscan land, Tuscan traditions, and the passion of three Tuscan women.

About Pasquale Pelissero

Founded in 1921 by brothers Giuseppe and Giovanni Pelissero, the tiny family-owned-and-operated Pasquale Pelissero estate entered its modern era in... the 1970s when its namesake, Pasquale, began bottling his estate-grown wines. Pasquale, or Papa, was a pioneer in Barbaresco because, at that time, few other estates were bottling their own Barbaresco. Pasquale’s daughter, Ornella, started working in the vineyards when she was just 15, and she assumed control of Pasquale Pelissero in 2007 when her father suddenly passed away. Just under 20 acres in the hills around Neive, Pasquale Pelissero grows sustainably and adheres to tradition — indeed, Ornella’s only concession to modern technology is a temperature-controlled fermentation tank. Ornella and her son, Simone, do everything at Pasquale Pelissero, from maintaining the vines to vinifying their wines in their cellar that sits near the top of the Bricco San Giuliano hill. Pasquale Pelissero crafts fewer than 4,000 cases of its tradition, terroir-driven wine a year.

Marchesi Antinori Castello della Sala

Marchesi Antinori Castello della Sala Muffato Umbria IGT 2019 500ml

Marchese Antinori Castello della Sala

The stone fortress that serves as the namesake for Castello della Sala was built in 1350, but the modern age for this estate began in... 1940, when Marchese Niccolò Antinori purchased the 1,200-acre estate (495 acres planted to vine). In the late 1970s, Piero Antinori, son of Niccolò, felt inspired to create an age-worthy, complex white wine, so he joined forces with Umbrian native Renzo Cotarella, who had recently joined the Castello della Sala team. After years of tinkering, experimenting, and eureka moments, the estate’s flagship white, Cervaro della Sala was born, which saw its debut with the 1985 vintage, and a new Italian wine icon was born. But Castello della Sala isn’t limited to high quality whites; the estate’s vineyards sport fossil-rich calcareous-clay soils that, while ideal for white grape varietals, also makes for spectacular Pinot Noir. Today’s Castello della Sala crafts a range of wines that include multiple whites and reds, as well as Muffato della Sala, a showstopping dessert wine.

Marchesi Antinori Tormaresca

Tormaresca Bocca di Lupo Aglianico Castel del Monte IGT 2019 750ml

WD94

About Marchesi Antinori Tormaresca

When purchasing Tormaresca, the Antinori family’s Puglia estate, in 1998, the took a two-prong approach: the 247-acre Tenuta Bocca di Lupo... sits in Castel del Monte in the wild beauty of Murgia, and the 1,235-acre satellite called Masseria Maime in Salento, close to the Adriatic sea. Growing both indigenous and international grape varietals, Tormaresca draws from these two locations to create wines that offer a panoramic view of Puglia, while offering a finessed style that bridges traditional Italian and more modern wine profiles. As with most of Antinori's estates, Tormaresca rests in the capable hands of CEO, enologist, and winemaker Renzo Cotarella and his team, who work to craft wines that transmit the region's unusual volcanic terroir. Bocca di Lupo, the flagship Aglianico wine from Tormaresca’s Murgia site, may be the most famous of the estate’s releases, but Tormaresca also makes an entry-level red, Trentantelli, as well as Pietrabianca, a white, and Kaloro, a mineral-laden rosato; each wine represents a different facet of Puglia, one of Italy’s great undiscovered gems.

While Matthew Fioretti, Cerbaiona’s winemaker-owner, crafted this Merlot to gratify his own palate, he has... realized that it’s too good to keep to himself. The extremely low production 2019 San Vito Toscana derives from Merlot grapes purchased from trusted growers, and after whole berry fermentation, it ages in a combination of new barrique and amphorae; the resulting wine is a cult item waiting to happen.
